Aim: To enable Apple Business Chat (now known as Apple Messages for Business) for your store so customers on Apple devices can start a conversation with you directly from the Messages app.

Optimal Outcome: Your business is registered with Apple Messages for Business and ready to connect to Shopify, so shoppers can ask questions and get support without leaving their iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

What do you need to start:

  • A Shopify store

  • An Apple Business Register account (register.apple.com)

  • A Messaging Service Provider (MSP) or customer-messaging platform that Apple supports, or a Shopify app that connects the two

  • Your business details (legal name, logo, contact information) for the Apple registration

Why is this SOP Important: A huge share of e-commerce traffic comes from Apple devices. Letting those customers reach you inside Messages — an app they already use every day — removes friction from support and pre-sale questions. Faster answers mean fewer abandoned carts and more completed purchases.

Important — Apple's status: Apple Business Chat was rebranded to Apple Messages for Business. Apple has announced that Messages for Business is being wound down, so availability and timelines may have changed since this SOP was written. Confirm the current status on Apple's official pages before investing time in setup.

When and Where to execute: You'll work in Apple Business Register and in your Shopify admin. Do this once, up front, before you try to add the Apple Business Chat sales channel to your store (covered in the companion SOP, Setting Up the Apple Business Chat Sales Channel in Shopify).

Who Should Be Doing This: The store owner, or the person responsible for customer support and messaging.

What is Apple Messages for Business?

Apple Messages for Business (formerly Apple Business Chat) lets customers on Apple devices start a conversation with a business straight from the Messages app, as well as from Safari, Maps, Spotlight search, and your own website or app. Inside the chat, customers can ask questions, get help, schedule, and in some setups even pay — all within the familiar Messages experience. To use it, your business must be registered with Apple and connected through an approved messaging provider.

Execution

Resources/Tools & Set up

  • An Apple Business Register account

  • An approved Messaging Service Provider (MSP) or a connecting Shopify app

  • Your business branding and contact details

Confirm you meet the prerequisites

  1. Make sure you have an active Shopify store and the business details you'll need: legal business name, customer-facing brand name, logo, and a support email or phone number.

  2. Choose how you'll connect to Apple. Messages for Business requires a Messaging Service Provider (MSP) approved by Apple, or a customer support platform / Shopify app that acts as one. Pick this provider before you register.

Register with Apple Business Register

  1. Go to https://register.apple.com and sign in with your Apple ID (use a business Apple ID, not a personal one).

  2. Create your brand profile, entering your business name, logo, and the details customers will see when they message you.

  3. Select your Messaging Service Provider from Apple's list during registration, so Apple knows which platform will route your messages.

  4. Submit your registration. Apple reviews each application; approval is not instant, so allow time for the review to complete.

Connect your messaging provider

  1. Once Apple approves your brand, finish the setup inside your chosen MSP or support platform. This links the Messages for Business account Apple created to the tool that will actually handle the conversations your team sees and replies to.

  2. Run a test conversation to confirm messages flow correctly from a customer's Messages app into your provider's inbox and back.

Next step: connect it to Shopify

  1. With registration complete and your provider connected, you're ready to add the Apple Business Chat sales channel to your store. Follow the companion SOP, Setting Up the Apple Business Chat Sales Channel in Shopify, to surface the chat option on your storefront.

Conclusion

You're done! Your business is registered with Apple Messages for Business and connected to a messaging provider, ready to be added to your Shopify store.
