Perplexity Shopping for Brands: How Products Get Listed

Perplexity shopping finds products through its crawler, its Merchant Program, PayPal's catalog sync and Shopify's data feed. Get listed through the right door, then make sure the page it sends people to can close.

Most founders asking me about Perplexity want one thing: a form to fill out so their products show up. There's a form. But it's one of four doors, and the door matters less than what happens after a shopper walks through it.

Here's the short answer. Perplexity shopping shows product cards inside its answers, built from data it pulls from four places: its own crawler (PerplexityBot) reading your public pages, the free Perplexity Merchant Program, PayPal's catalog sync for PayPal merchants, and platform integrations like Shopify. Since November 2025, US shoppers can buy many of those products in the chat through PayPal, and the retailer stays the merchant of record. So the work that gets you listed is the same feed, review and product page work that gets you into Google and ChatGPT.

To get listed on Perplexity shopping: 1. Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt. 2. Apply to the free Merchant Program. 3. Turn on PayPal store sync if you take PayPal. 4. Fix the product page those cards send people to.

The rest of this post is the why behind each step, plus the part nobody puts in the setup guides.

What is Perplexity shopping, and what happened to Buy with Pro?

Perplexity launched shopping on November 18, 2024. Pro subscribers in the US got "Buy with Pro," a one-click checkout for select products from select merchants, with free shipping on those orders. If Buy with Pro wasn't available, Perplexity sent the shopper to the merchant's site. The same post said the product cards weren't sponsored and that discovery was powered by integrations including Shopify.

That's the version most "perplexity buy with pro" searches are still about. It changed.

On November 19, 2025, CNBC reported that Perplexity would roll out free agentic shopping to US users with PayPal, and that shoppers would eventually be able to buy from more than 5,000 merchants. CNBC also noted the big shift: under Buy with Pro, Perplexity had been the intermediary completing purchases. Under the new setup, PayPal merchants are the merchants of record and handle purchases, customer service and returns themselves.

Six days later Perplexity published Shopping That Puts You First, confirming the experience was free for all US users, that it remembers past searches to personalize results, and that checkout runs through PayPal in the same window.

Perplexity didn't kill in-chat buying. It handed the checkout to PayPal and handed the customer back to you.

That's the opposite of what happened at OpenAI, which pulled back its own in-chat checkout this year (I broke that down in what happened to ChatGPT Instant Checkout).

How do products actually get listed on Perplexity?

Four doors. Here's how they compare, based only on what Perplexity, PayPal and Shopify have published.

Door What it is Who it fits What you control
PerplexityBot crawl Perplexity's crawler reads your public pages to surface and link them in answers Every store, no application Your robots.txt, page copy, reviews, structured data
Perplexity Merchant Program Free program to share product specs directly with Perplexity Brands that want richer, fresher data in the index The product data you submit
PayPal store sync + agent ready PayPal makes your catalog discoverable in Perplexity and lets you take payment there Stores already using PayPal checkout Your PayPal setup and catalog
Shopify Catalog Shopify's structured product data shared with AI channels Shopify stores Channel toggles in your admin

Door 1: let the crawler in

This one is free and most stores have never checked it. Perplexity's crawler documentation says PerplexityBot is used to surface and link websites in its search results, and recommends allowing it in robots.txt to appear there. It also says a firewall may need to whitelist Perplexity's bots. If your security app or Cloudflare rule is blocking it, you're invisible to the open-web side of perplexity product search, no matter what else you do.

Door 2: the Perplexity merchant program

When Perplexity launched the Merchant Program, it described it as free for merchants and aimed at large retailers sharing product specs. The listed benefits: a better chance of being a recommended product, eligibility for one-click checkout, free API access and a dashboard showing search and shopping trends around your products. The original signup copy was written for large retailers. Apply anyway. The worst answer is no.

Door 3: PayPal

This is the door that powers in-chat buying today. PayPal's launch release says its "store sync" makes merchant catalogs discoverable in Perplexity's results, and "agent ready" lets merchants accept payment there using their existing PayPal configuration. The first retailers named were Abercrombie & Fitch, Ashley Furniture, Fabletics, Adorama and Newegg.

Door 4: Shopify (check before you count on it)

Here's where the guides get sloppy. Shopify announced Agentic Storefronts on December 10, 2025, saying merchants could publish catalogs to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot (PYMNTS coverage). Shopify's own April 2026 Perplexity shopping guide says Shopify Catalog syndicates product data to Perplexity.

But Shopify's Agentic Storefronts help page today lists ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta. Perplexity isn't on that list. So open your admin, look at the channel list, and believe what you see there over any blog post. Including this one. (Shopify's side of this is covered in Shopify agentic storefronts.)

Why is the same feed and review work enough?

Because every AI shopping surface is reading the same raw material.

Perplexity's 2025 post says its product cards focus on what matters for the shopper's specific question, alongside specs and reviews. Its 2024 post said richer product details help it decide whether a product is high quality and relevant. Translate that: clean titles, complete attributes, current price and stock, real reviews that mention real use cases, and a page that answers the question in plain words.

That's the same list that gets you into Google AI Mode shopping and the same list in how to rank products in ChatGPT. I'd rather you do it once, properly, than chase a separate hack for every new chat app. The full map of these channels lives in our AI commerce guide.

And the channel is growing. Shopify said AI-driven traffic to its stores had risen sevenfold since January 2025 and orders from AI searches elevenfold, per the PYMNTS report linked above. Adobe data cited in Shopify's guide found AI-referred shoppers converted 31% more than shoppers from other sources.

What does a Perplexity shopper cost you if the page can't close?

Here's the thing nobody in the setup guides says. Perplexity doesn't close the sale for you. Either the shopper buys through PayPal off a card built from your data, or they click through to your product page. Both run on the words, photos and proof you wrote.

So run the math on a store like this, a hypothetical. A skincare serum brand gets 10,000 AI-referred visitors a month. Conversion rate 1.2%, average order value $58. Revenue per visitor is $0.70 (1.2% x $58 = $0.696). That's $6,960 a month.

Same visitors, rebuilt page. Conversion rate 2.6%, average order value $74. Revenue per visitor $1.92 (2.6% x $74 = $1.924). That's $19,240 a month.

Getting listed is the leak you can see. A page that can't sell is the leak you can't.

Now the real numbers. On one bedding product, Copper Bamboo Sheets, we moved conversion rate from 1.0% to 4.3% and average order value from $125 to $221. Revenue per visitor went from $1.25 to $9.50. On 10,000 visitors, that's $95,000 instead of $12,500. See the full case study numbers. Real client numbers, not typical results, and not a promise of what your store will do.

Every AI engine that sends you a shopper is amplifying your page. If the page is bleeding, you just bought a bigger leak.

What should you do this week?

One concrete action: open your robots.txt and your firewall rules today and make sure PerplexityBot isn't blocked. It takes ten minutes and it's the only door that needs no approval from anyone.

Then work down the list.

Is Perplexity shopping worth the effort for a small brand?

Yes, because most of the effort isn't Perplexity-specific. Fix the crawler access, apply to the program, clean your product data, and you've also done most of the work for Google and ChatGPT. The marginal cost of Perplexity on top is close to zero.

But don't confuse a listing with a sale. I've watched founders celebrate showing up in an AI answer while the page those shoppers landed on converted at 1%. Starving traffic was never the problem. The page was.

P.S. A Perplexity listing gets you the visitor. Only the page decides whether that visitor is worth $0.70 or $1.92.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my products listed on Perplexity shopping?

There are four doors: let PerplexityBot crawl your store, apply to the free Perplexity Merchant Program, sync your catalog through PayPal if you take PayPal, and check whether your Shopify Catalog data is shared with Perplexity. Most brands should do the first two this week.

Is Perplexity Buy with Pro still a thing?

Buy with Pro launched in November 2024 for Pro subscribers, with Perplexity completing the purchase. In November 2025 Perplexity opened shopping free to all US users and moved in-chat checkout to PayPal, with the retailer as merchant of record.

Does the Perplexity Merchant Program cost anything?

Perplexity said the Merchant Program is free for merchants when it launched it. Its listed benefits were a better chance of being recommended, eligibility for one-click checkout, free API access and a merchant dashboard.

Who handles returns on a Perplexity order?

You do. Under the PayPal setup the retailer stays merchant of record, so customer service, returns and the post-purchase relationship stay with your store.

Can Shopify stores sell inside Perplexity?

Shopify announced Agentic Storefronts for ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot in December 2025, but Shopify's help center today lists ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta. Check the channel list in your own admin before you count on it.
