ChatGPT Instant Checkout: What Happened and What Replaced It
OpenAI switched off buying inside ChatGPT six months after launch. A ChatGPT shopper who picks your product now lands on your own checkout, which means the page you own is still the thing that gets paid.

In February a skincare founder told me she'd paused her product page rebuild. Her reason: "Everyone's going to buy inside ChatGPT by summer, so why polish a page nobody will see?"
It's October. Nobody is buying inside ChatGPT.
Here's the short version of what happened to ChatGPT Instant Checkout. OpenAI launched it on September 29, 2025 with Stripe, so a US shopper could buy from an Etsy seller without leaving the chat, with Shopify brands like Glossier and SKIMS lined up next. On March 24, 2026, OpenAI said the first version "did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide" and told merchants to use their own checkout while it focuses on product discovery. Today a ChatGPT shopper who picks your Shopify product lands on your store's checkout, in an in-app browser on mobile or a new tab on desktop.
Your product page still closes the sale. It just has a new front door.
What happened to ChatGPT Instant Checkout?
The whole arc fits on one napkin.
September 29, 2025. OpenAI and Stripe launch Instant Checkout for US ChatGPT users, Etsy sellers first, Shopify "coming soon," and open-source the Agentic Commerce Protocol underneath it. Payment runs on a single-use Shared Payment Token scoped to one merchant and one amount. That's all on Stripe's announcement.
October 14, 2025. Walmart signs on.
Late January 2026. Trade press reports a 4% fee on Shopify merchants' Instant Checkout sales, deducted at the point of transaction, on top of normal processing.
March 7, 2026. Forrester reports fewer than 30 Shopify merchants actively using the feature, and OpenAI scaling it back.
March 12, 2026. An OpenAI spokesperson tells Modern Retail that "Instant Checkout is moving to Apps."
March 24, 2026. OpenAI's statement lands: the first version lacked the flexibility they wanted, merchants can use their own checkout, ChatGPT focuses on discovery. The same day Shopify switches on agentic storefronts for eligible stores, with ChatGPT linking out to your store on desktop, an in-app browser on mobile, and "no transaction fees beyond standard processing rates."
Six months. A launch, a fee, fewer than 30 live Shopify stores, and a handoff back to the page you already own.
I'll admit I expected OpenAI to grind on this for a year. They conceded in one quarter.
Why did buying inside ChatGPT stall?
The people with the data said why, and none of it was about the model.
Walmart's EVP of AI, Daniel Danker, told Modern Retail that items sold inside the chatbot converted at rates "three times lower" than items that required clicking out to Walmart. Shoppers "generally don't want to split the checkout experience, where it buys the one item, even though they had other items in their Walmart cart already."
A specialty retailer executive in the same piece listed what it couldn't do: real-time inventory, coupons, promotions, loyalty, store pickup.
Etsy, the launch partner, "did not end up seeing a large volume of sales" from it.
Here's the thing. Every one of those complaints is the same complaint. In-chat checkout was a rented shelf. One item, full freight, no bundle, no free-shipping threshold, no reason to add a second unit. Everything that makes a buyer spend $96 instead of $72 lives on your page. The chat had none of it.
So the chat sold less, per buyer, than the page. Walmart measured it. Three to one.
Founders heard "buy in ChatGPT" and pictured a shortcut past the product page. What shipped was a shortcut past the average order value.
Where does a ChatGPT shopper actually buy now?
Three doors, and only one of them is open to a normal Shopify store.
Door one: your own checkout. This is the default. Shopify's help page is blunt: "ChatGPT users complete their purchase on your online store checkout in a ChatGPT in-app browser, or in a new tab when customers use ChatGPT web." There are no fees beyond standard payment processing. You need US customers, products that qualify for Shopify Catalog, and filled-in policies. It's probably already on; the settings are in the Shopify agentic storefronts guide.
Door two: a retailer-built app inside ChatGPT. This is what "moving to Apps" meant. Walmart's agent Sparky now runs as an app in ChatGPT: discovery in the chat, then a Walmart environment with account linking, loyalty and payment. Etsy launched its own app in May: tag @Etsy in a prompt, browse, click through to Etsy to buy. If you're doing $40,000 a month with a team of three, this door isn't yours yet.
Door three: direct checkout on the other agents. Shopify's agentic storefronts page offers a Shopify-powered direct checkout inside Google AI Mode, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta if you activate it. ChatGPT is the one channel on that list without it.
| Checkout path | September 2025 to March 2026 | October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Buy inside ChatGPT (Instant Checkout) | Live for US Etsy sellers, then select Shopify brands and Walmart; single item per purchase; 4% fee reported for Shopify merchants from late January | Pulled back. OpenAI says merchants use their own checkout; "Instant Checkout is moving to Apps" |
| Shopify store found in ChatGPT | Opt in to Instant Checkout, or get discovered and linked out | Agentic storefronts on by default for eligible stores; purchase completes on your checkout in an in-app browser or new tab; no fee beyond processing |
| Retailer app inside ChatGPT | Did not exist | Walmart's Sparky (checkout inside a Walmart environment) and Etsy's app (click through to Etsy) |
| Google AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot, Meta via Shopify | Rolling out | Optional Shopify-powered direct checkout inside the channel |
| Agentic Commerce Protocol | Powered Instant Checkout: checkout, payment, feeds | Spec still published; the getting-started step is a product feed |
Is the Agentic Commerce Protocol dead too?
No, and this trips people up.
OpenAI's commerce docs still describe the Agentic Commerce Protocol in three parts: agentic checkout, delegated payment, and product feeds. The getting-started step is sharing a product feed. The agentic checkout spec is still published with no deprecation notice, and Stripe's docs still list the protocol as one way a seller shares a catalog with agents.
So the plumbing is alive. The storefront OpenAI built on top of it was pulled.
For a Shopify store, you don't build any of this. Shopify Catalog carries your feed and handles both protocols in the background. How ChatGPT reads that feed and picks products is covered in how to rank products in ChatGPT.
One honest gap. A few third-party blogs claim OpenAI quietly turned in-chat buying back on for Shopify brands over the summer. I went looking for an OpenAI or Shopify page that says so and couldn't find one. Shopify's help page, as of today, still sends ChatGPT buyers to your checkout. Treat the relaunch story as rumor.
The protocol didn't fail. The rented shelf did. Your feed gets you found; your page gets you paid.
What does this mean for your revenue per visitor?
Here's the math, and it's the only part of this story that moves your bank balance.
Run it on a store like this, a hypothetical. A kitchen brand selling a $72 cast-iron skillet. ChatGPT starts naming it when people ask for a skillet that won't warp on induction. Conversion rate on the product page 1.5%, average order value $72. That means revenue per visitor is $1.08. On 10,000 ChatGPT-referred visitors a month, that's $10,800.
Now the page gets rebuilt around the question those shoppers arrive with: "Why is this $72 instead of the $30 one?" The warranty, the induction test, the two-skillet bundle at $96. Conversion rate moves to 3.0%, average order value to $96. Revenue per visitor is now $2.88. On the same 10,000 visitors, that's $28,800.
Conversion rate x average order value x visitors. 1.5% x $72 before, 3.0% x $96 after. Not a client result.
Same traffic. Same chat recommending the same skillet. $18,000 a month apart, decided entirely by the page the buyer landed on after the click.
Now a real one. A bedding brand we worked with had a conversion rate of 1.0% and an average order value of $125, so revenue per visitor was $1.25. On 10,000 visitors, $12,500. After we rebuilt the top three product pages, conversion rate was 3.5% and average order value was $231. Revenue per visitor $8.10. On the same 10,000 visitors, $81,000. Full numbers are on our results page. Real client numbers, not typical results, and not a promise of what your store will do.
Read Walmart's data again with that lens. In-chat checkout converted a third as well as the click-out. The page was the better closer the whole time. OpenAI didn't take a weapon away from you in March. It stopped standing between you and your buyer.
A ChatGPT shopper arrives with a shortlist of three, so your page is the closing argument; we covered writing a product page for ChatGPT traffic separately, and why one-click checkout can't rescue a buyer who never adds to cart.
What should a Shopify founder do this week?
The skincare founder asked me what to do instead of waiting. Here's what I told her.
Open Shopify admin, go to Sales channels, then Agentic, and confirm ChatGPT is on and your policies are filled in. Ask ChatGPT three questions a real buyer would ask about your category and see whether your product gets named. Then pull chatgpt.com referrals from your analytics and compute what each visitor is worth: conversion rate times average order value. Under $2 and the page is leaking what the chat sends.
Then rebuild the hero page around the one question your buyer is silently asking. Everything else in agentic commerce is a distraction until that number moves. The wider map of who sends traffic and where each agent completes the sale is in the AI commerce guide. Keep the hero image a real photo, too; which gallery slots AI can fill is its own post.
Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT Instant Checkout still available?
Not in the form it launched in. On March 24, 2026 OpenAI said the first version didn't offer the flexibility it wanted and that merchants can use their own checkout while ChatGPT focuses on discovery. "Moving to Apps" so far means retailer-built apps like Walmart's and Etsy's.
Where does a ChatGPT shopper buy a Shopify product now?
On your store. Shopify's help page says ChatGPT users complete their purchase on your online store checkout in an in-app browser on mobile, or a new tab on the web.
Did OpenAI charge a fee on Instant Checkout sales?
Trade press reported a 4% fee on Shopify merchants' Instant Checkout sales from late January 2026. Shopify now says selling in ChatGPT through agentic storefronts carries no fees beyond standard payment processing.
Is the Agentic Commerce Protocol dead?
No. OpenAI's developer docs still publish all three parts, and the getting-started step is a product feed. The spec is alive; the in-chat storefront built on it was pulled back.
What should I fix first for ChatGPT traffic?
Your hero product page. Measure conversion rate and average order value on chatgpt.com referrals, then rebuild the page around the one question that decides the sale.
What to do next
Pull your chatgpt.com referral sessions for the last 30 days, compute conversion rate times average order value, and write the number down. That's what the chat is worth to you today.
Book Your Profit Audit
ChatGPT handed the sale back to your product page in March, so the page is where your revenue per visitor is won or lost. Book a free profit audit and we'll show you exactly where that page is leaking the buyers ChatGPT sends, then rebuild a high-converting product sales page in less than 15 minutes.

P.S. The chat was a rented shelf, and the rent was 4%. The page is the one you own. Fix the owner's page before you worry about anyone's shelf.
