Shopify Agentic Storefronts: Setup Guide and What to Fix First
Shopify already switched agentic storefronts on for you. Switched on and set up are two different stores. Here are the settings to check, the direct checkout tradeoff nobody mentions, and the 5 signals that decide if an agent picks you.

Did you turn on agentic storefronts? Trick question. Shopify already did.
Shopify agentic storefronts send your product catalog to AI assistants (ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta) through Shopify Catalog, so a shopper can ask a chatbot for a recommendation and get your product back. It's active by default for eligible stores. Setup takes about 20 minutes: check your policies, decide on direct checkout per channel, map any product data hiding in metafields, and run the search preview tool. The part that takes longer is the part that decides everything: whether your product data is complete enough for an agent to pick you.
Switched on and set up are two different stores. Most founders I talk to are running the first one and don't know it.
What are Shopify agentic storefronts, and are they already on?
Shopify's agentic storefronts help page says it plainly: the feature "is active by default for eligible stores." Your products reach the AI channels through Shopify Catalog. Google AI Mode and Gemini are the exception, and they read from the Google & YouTube sales channel or Merchant Center instead.
Each channel sells differently:
| AI channel | How the buyer pays | Where it gets your products |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Your own online store checkout, in an in-app browser or a new tab | Shopify Catalog |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Shopify-powered direct checkout inside the chat, if active (still rolling out) | Google & YouTube channel or Merchant Center |
| Microsoft Copilot | Direct checkout inside the chat, if active | Shopify Catalog |
| Meta (including Muse) | Direct checkout, if active, for U.S., Canada and Mexico buyers | Shopify Catalog |
| Shop | Set in the Shop channel's selling method | Shopify Catalog |
Meta is the newest. Shopify's changelog added Meta as an AI channel on September 8, 2026, shared by default. New channels show up and you're enrolled before you read the announcement.
Older guides saying ChatGPT orders show up as "Instant Checkout" are stale. Shopify's ChatGPT page now calls ChatGPT "a discovery-focused referrer," and there's no direct checkout toggle for it at all. We covered why OpenAI walked away from that in how to rank products in ChatGPT. This post is the other half: what to do inside your own admin.
Shopify flipped the switch for every store at once. It didn't stock a single shelf.
Which settings should you check in Sales channels > Agentic?
Here's the setup, in order. Every step comes from Shopify's Managing agentic storefronts page.
- Fill in your terms of service, privacy policy, and return and refund policy in Settings, then Policies.
- Open Sales channels, then Agentic, and read what's active.
- Decide whether to keep Allow Shopify to manage for me.
- Choose direct checkout on or off for Google, Copilot and Meta.
- Map product data stored in metafields or tags.
- Run the search preview tool on your top 10 sellers.
Step 1 is a hard gate. Shopify requires those three policies for ChatGPT, Google, Copilot and Meta. A missing refund policy can keep you out of all four.
Step 3 is where people get surprised. Allow Shopify to manage for me gives every channel Catalog access, turns direct checkout on, and auto-enrolls you in channels that don't exist yet. Turn it off and you get four controls: Shopify Catalog access, Auto enroll new storefronts, per-channel access, and Direct checkout. One trap: if you turn manage-for-me back on later, Shopify says it "automatically activates all agentic storefronts settings, including direct checkout." Every choice you made gets reset.
Also check eligibility before you blame the agents. Shopify's Catalog requirements say you need the Starter plan or higher, no password page, a title, at least 1 image, a price above zero, and a product that isn't Unlisted or hidden from search engines. Account standing counts too, including a low chargeback rate.
Should you keep direct checkout on?
This is the setting nobody writes about, and it's the one that touches your margin.
Direct checkout lets a Google, Copilot or Meta shopper buy without landing on your store. Less friction. But read Shopify's Google AI Mode and Gemini page to the bottom. Checkout blocks that offer "add-ons or upsells" might not display. Product bundles, subscriptions and customizable products aren't supported. Google Analytics and custom pixels won't fire. Trust badges and review blocks can be dropped too.
Here's the math. Run it on a hypothetical skincare brand selling a $48 vitamin C serum. On its own checkout, 22% of buyers add a $26 moisturizer from an upsell block. That's an average order value of $48 plus $5.72, or $53.72. Per 100 orders, that's $5,372. In direct checkout the upsell block doesn't load, so 100 orders bring in $4,800.
Average order value x 100 orders. $48 serum, 22% take a $26 add-on on the store checkout. Not a client result.
Direct checkout has to win 112 orders for every 100 your checkout would close just to tie. Maybe it does. That's a test, not a default.
My take: if your order value lives in checkout (bundles, subscriptions, add-ons), turn direct checkout off for a month and compare. One simple product with no add-ons? Leave it on. Either way, move your best add-on onto the product page. Our guide to raising average order value on Shopify shows where the offer earns more than checkout ever did.
Direct checkout removes friction. It also removes your salesperson from the register.
What does the search preview tool tell you about your products?
This is the most useful screen in the Agentic section, and I've yet to meet a founder who's opened it.
In Sales channels, then Agentic, type a keyword your buyer would use. Shopify shows whether your products rank in the global top results for that query across Shopify Catalog. Every product gets a Listing quality meter. Click it and you see the five signals underneath.
| Signal | What Shopify measures | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| Description completeness | Word count of your product description | Write facts a buyer would ask about: size, material, fit, who it's for |
| Image coverage | Number of product images | Add angles, scale shots and in-use photos |
| Product reviews | Average rating and review count, from verified sources | Ask for reviews that name the use case (why specific beats plentiful) |
| Variant and option completeness | Variants, options, stock, and confusing acronyms or numbers in option names | Rename "SZ-02" to "Medium" and fill every variant |
| Shop policy completeness | Shipping, returns and refund policies present | Fill in every policy in Settings |
One caveat: Shopify says agents "often re-rank results based on their own logic," so treat the preview as directional. Popularity and brand recognition count too, and those build over time. You control the five signals. Do those first.
Every one of the five is product data. None is your logo or your ad budget.
Description completeness is where most stores fail. The theme looks full while the description field holds two lines.
How do you fix product data an agent can't read?
The theme shows a beautiful size chart, ingredient list and "best for" badge. All of it sits in metafields. Shopify Catalog sends the title, description, options, images, price and availability by default, and may never see the good stuff. Amazon sellers hit this wall first, because the assistant there answers from listing facts, reviews and Q&A, as I covered in Amazon Rufus listing optimization.
Shopify's Catalog Mapping tool fixes that. In Sales channels, then Agentic, click Review how your product data is sent to the Shopify Catalog for Agentic Channels. You can point the product title, description and category at a metafield or metaobject. You can turn on Custom variant grouping if you split one product into separate listings by color or size. Click Change in the Product summary to preview what an agent receives. Changes process with a delay.
Four more fixes, all from Shopify's own pages:
- Answer the questions. The Shopify Knowledge Base app lets you review the facts AI agents use about your store, see common shopper questions, and write your own answers. Shopify's AI product guidance points to it directly.
- Fill the fields agents read. Shopify lists title, description, images, type, vendor, collections, tags, barcode and variant option names.
- Put legal disclosures early. Shopify says relevant legal disclosures belong in the first 6,000 characters of your description.
- Skip the llms.txt app. Shopify's Catalog and product discovery page says every store already serves
/agents.md,/llms.txtand/llms-full.txt. Edit them with anagents.md.liquidtemplate if you want. Blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt doesn't stop Catalog either.
An agent can't feel your brand. It can only count your facts.
How do you know if agentic storefronts are working?
Sales channels, then Agentic, shows sales, orders, online store sessions and online store conversion for each AI channel. Sales combine referral orders and direct checkout orders. There's also a total sales report across all channels under Understand your performance on agentic channels.
Watch online store conversion by channel. It tells you what happens after the agent does its job. And I'll be blunt: that's where the money is.
An agent can shortlist you. It can't make your page close. ChatGPT sends every buyer to your product page, already holding three compared options. If your page restarts the pitch from zero, they tap back and pick the next card.
We've seen what a page rebuild does to that same buyer. One bedding brand's Cooling Bamboo Sheets page went from a 1.0% conversion rate and a $125 average order value to 4.3% and $254. That took revenue per visitor from $1.25 to $10.92. On 10,000 visitors, that's $12,500 before and $109,200 after. See the full case study numbers. Real client numbers, not typical results, and not a promise of what your store will do.
None of that came from a channel setting. It came from the page. We wrote the playbooks for both arriving buyers: the Shopify product page for ChatGPT traffic and the product page for Google Shopping traffic. For the full map of every AI channel, start with our AI commerce guide. And judge each channel on revenue per visitor, not on clicks.

Open Sales channels, then Agentic, today. Type the one phrase a buyer would use to find your best seller into the search preview tool. Click the listing quality meter on that product and fix the weakest of the five signals before you close the tab.
One product. One signal. That's the first real setup step Shopify didn't do for you.
Book Your Profit Audit
Shopify can put your products in front of every AI assistant, but the buyer it sends still lands on a page that has to close. Get your free profit audit and we'll show you where that page leaks buyers, then show you how to rebuild a high-converting product sales page in less than 15 minutes.

P.S. Shopify switched your store on. Only you can set it up. The agents pick the products with the most facts, then hand the buyer to your page.
Frequently asked questions
Are Shopify agentic storefronts on by default?
Yes. Shopify says agentic storefronts are active by default for eligible stores, under a setting called Allow Shopify to manage for me. That setting gives every AI channel access to your products through Shopify Catalog, turns on direct checkout where it's supported, and enrolls you in new channels automatically.
Which AI channels do Shopify agentic storefronts sell on?
Shopify's help center lists ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta, plus Shop. ChatGPT sends the buyer to your own checkout. Google, Copilot and Meta can sell inside the chat through Shopify-powered direct checkout when it's active.
How do I sell in ChatGPT with Shopify?
If your store sells to U.S. customers, your products are eligible for Shopify Catalog, and your terms of service, privacy policy and refund policy are filled in, you're already in. ChatGPT gets your products through Shopify Catalog with no app and no fee beyond standard payment processing, and the buyer checks out on your store.
Do checkout upsells work in AI direct checkout?
Often not. Shopify says checkout blocks that offer add-ons or upsells might not display in Google AI Mode and Gemini or Microsoft Copilot direct checkout, and product bundles, subscriptions and custom pixels aren't supported there.
How do I check how my products rank in agentic storefronts?
Go to Sales channels, then Agentic, and use the search preview tool. Type a product name or keyword and Shopify shows which of your products rank in Shopify Catalog search, with a listing quality meter built from description completeness, image coverage, reviews, variant data and store policies.
