How to Rank Products in ChatGPT Shopping Results

Half the guides on this question still tell you to switch on a checkout OpenAI is walking away from. Here's what ChatGPT actually weighs when it picks products, and the four places you can move it.

Half the guides ranking for this question tell you to switch on Instant Checkout. OpenAI is walking away from it.

Here's how to rank products in ChatGPT: make your product data complete and current (through Shopify Catalog or a direct feed), let OpenAI's search crawler read your product pages, write titles and descriptions made of checkable facts, and earn detailed reviews and mentions on sites you don't own. OpenAI says ChatGPT picks products from structured metadata, third-party content and the shopper's own context. There's no bidding for the product carousel. And when the buyer clicks, the sale happens on your page, not in the chat.

Every founder who's asked me this lately opened with "How do I get into ChatGPT?" If you're on Shopify, you're probably already in. The better question is why ChatGPT would put you first.

How does ChatGPT decide which products to show?

OpenAI answers this on its Shopping with ChatGPT Search help page. ChatGPT considers three inputs:

  1. Structured metadata from first-party and third-party providers (price, product description) and other third-party content.
  2. What the model already knows before it runs a new search.
  3. OpenAI's safety standards and product policies.

Then the shopper's context bends the weights. Give it a $30 budget and it leans on price. Skip the budget and it leans on other things, like reviews.

When more than one store sells the same item, there's a second ranking. OpenAI says merchants are ranked on availability, price, quality, and whether they're the maker or primary seller of that item.

Read that last factor again. The maker has an edge over the reseller. Most founders never claim it, because nothing in their feed or page says who made the thing.

And one line on that page should reset how you think about all of this: product results "are not ads, nor influenced by any OpenAI partnerships." ChatGPT does run ads now. OpenAI's ads help page says testing started in the U.S. on February 9, 2026, for Free and Go users, in a labeled unit below the answer. But OpenAI says advertisers can't shape or rank the answer itself.

You can buy the slot under ChatGPT's answer. You can't buy the answer.

Is Instant Checkout still worth chasing?

No. And this is where most of the top-ranking guides are out of date.

In March, OpenAI published Powering Product Discovery in ChatGPT and said the first version of Instant Checkout "did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide." Merchants now use their own checkout while OpenAI works on discovery. Its merchant page goes further: OpenAI is "moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout experience," and purchases are completed on merchant-owned websites or apps. It also says there are no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT.

The same page says Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already integrated, with no application needed. Everyone else can apply for a direct feed and join a waitlist. Shopping is live for U.S. users. Shopify's agentic storefronts help page calls ChatGPT a discovery-focused referrer: the buyer finishes on your checkout.

So getting listed is solved for most Shopify brands. Ranking isn't. That's the job.

Does your product feed decide where you rank?

In June, an AI search analytics company published a study of about 1 million ChatGPT shopping offers tracked over 30 days. Three numbers matter:

The study also notes that page-based retrieval has traditionally run through web search on platforms like Google Shopping. That's a good reason to keep your Merchant Center feed clean, even though OpenAI never names Google as a source.

Here's how the two paths compare.

Where ChatGPT gets your product What it reads What you control
Shopify Catalog or a direct feed Title, description, variants, images, price, availability, brand Every field. Keep it complete and current
Your product page (crawled) Page text, structured data, price, shipping and availability signals The words on the page and your schema
Third-party sites Review summaries, "best of" lists, forum threads, labels like "Budget-friendly" Only indirectly, by earning them

OpenAI's feed best practices are short and blunt. Use "concise, factual copy." Give every purchasable variant its own row with its own title, price, image and availability. Add a tracking parameter like utm_medium=feed to your product links if you want to see feed clicks.

Watch what that does to a title. "The Voyager" tells a machine nothing. "Voyager 32 oz Insulated Stainless Steel Water Bottle, Leakproof Straw Lid" answers four questions at once. ChatGPT may rewrite titles into simpler versions, but it can only simplify what's there.

A feed full of brand poetry is a blank form with nice handwriting.

What does ChatGPT read on your product page?

First, make sure it can read it at all.

OpenAI's crawler documentation says OAI-SearchBot is the bot that surfaces sites in ChatGPT's search features, and sites that opt out "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers." GPTBot is separate and covers model training. You can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot. I've seen copied robots.txt templates block every AI bot in one line, and the founder never knew.

Second, structured data. Google's product structured data guide splits it into product snippets for review pages and merchant listings for pages where you can buy, and says providing both structured data and a Merchant Center feed "maximizes your eligibility." Most Shopify themes output basic Product markup. Few get shipping, returns and review data right.

Third, the words. The study found three page levers separating top offers from the bottom: price and value signals (ChatGPT's "Best price" tag goes to the lowest price it knows for that exact product), visible trust like detailed reviews, FAQs, video and Q&A, and clear, descriptive titles that name common use cases.

This is where a lot of AI-written copy loses. If every store in your category used the same prompt, ChatGPT can't tell you apart. We covered what a useful tool does differently in the best AI product description generator for Shopify.

Why do reviews and third-party mentions carry so much weight?

Because ChatGPT doesn't take your word for it.

OpenAI says its review summaries come "from public websites," and the labels on product images (like "Most popular" or "Budget-friendly") are generated from information that "may include third party data." A "Budget-friendly" label, OpenAI says, might just mean reviewers keep mentioning good value.

Think of it as a courtroom. Your feed is the ID card. Your page is your testimony. Reviews, "best of" lists and forum threads are the witnesses. ChatGPT trusts the witnesses most, because nobody paid them to be there. Amazon's assistant leans on the same witnesses, which is why Alexa for Shopping listing optimization starts with your reviews and Q&A.

A billboard shouts. A witness gets quoted.

So the work that moves you up is the slow kind:

ChatGPT reads your page like a lawyer reads a resume: politely, then it calls your references.

How do you check if ChatGPT is naming your products?

Keep it cheap. Before you pay for any AI visibility dashboard, do three free things:

  1. Write 15 buyer questions in your customers' words, like "best insulated water bottle for a construction worker under $50." Run them through ChatGPT once a month and log who gets named.
  2. Check your Shopify admin. Shopify says orders from AI channels show with channel or referrer attribution.
  3. Get a quick outside read on how likely you are to be cited, so you know where to start.

I'll admit we ran this check on our own site and didn't love the answer. The breakdown is in our AI commerce guide.

What happens after ChatGPT sends the click?

This is the half nobody ranks for.

ChatGPT can put you first. Then the buyer lands with a shortlist in their head and a price already compared. If your page restarts the pitch from scratch, they go back and tap the next card.

And here's the math. Run it on a hypothetical store selling a $72 cast-iron griddle, getting 2,000 visitors a month from ChatGPT. On a standard page, conversion rate is 1.3% and average order value is $72. That's $0.94 revenue per visitor, or $1,872 a month. Rebuild the page so the first screen confirms what ChatGPT promised, and say conversion rate hits 2.4% with a $86 average order value (a matching scraper added at checkout). That's $2.06 revenue per visitor, or $4,128 on the same 2,000 visitors.

Same ranking. Same carousel spot. $2,256 more a month.

We've watched this happen on pages we rebuilt. A bedding brand went from a 1.0% conversion rate and a $125 average order value to 3.5% and $231, which took revenue per visitor from $1.25 to $8.10. On 10,000 visitors, that's $12,500 before and $81,000 after. See the full case study numbers. Real client numbers, not typical results, and not a promise of what your store will do.

None of that came from ranking higher. We wrote the playbook for that buyer in how to write a Shopify product page for ChatGPT traffic, and the same logic applies to Google Shopping traffic. Judge every channel on revenue per visitor, not on clicks.

Frequently asked questions

How does ChatGPT choose which products to recommend? Structured metadata, third-party content and the shopper's context. Among stores selling the same item, it ranks on availability, price, quality and whether you're the maker.

Can you pay to rank in ChatGPT shopping results? No. OpenAI says product results aren't ads. Ads are a separate labeled unit below the answer for Free and Go users.

Do I need to apply to get my Shopify products into ChatGPT? No. Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already integrated. Other brands can apply for a direct feed.

Can customers still use Instant Checkout in ChatGPT? Rarely. OpenAI says it's moving away from standalone Instant Checkout, and purchases finish on merchant websites or apps.

Does blocking AI crawlers hurt my ChatGPT visibility? Blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps you out of ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot is separate and only covers training.

What to do next

Open your robots.txt today and search for "OAI-SearchBot." If it's blocked, or a blanket rule blocks every bot, fix that first. Then take your best seller and rewrite its title so a stranger could picture the product without the photo.

Two changes before lunch. Both help the machine and the buyer.

Frequently asked questions

How does ChatGPT choose which products to recommend?

OpenAI says ChatGPT weighs structured metadata like price and product description from first-party and third-party providers, other third-party content, and the shopper's own query and context. When several merchants sell the same item, it ranks them on availability, price, quality and whether they're the maker or primary seller.

Can you pay to rank in ChatGPT shopping results?

No. OpenAI says product results are selected independently and aren't ads. Ads in ChatGPT are a separate, clearly labeled unit that appears below a response for Free and Go users, and OpenAI says advertisers can't shape or rank the answer itself.

Do I need to apply to get my Shopify products into ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI says Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already integrated, with no application or setup needed. Brands on other platforms can apply to share a direct product feed, and shopping in ChatGPT is currently live for U.S. users.

Can customers still use Instant Checkout in ChatGPT?

Rarely. OpenAI's merchant page says it's moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout and that purchases are completed on merchant-owned websites or apps. Plan for ChatGPT to send the buyer to your product page to decide.

Does blocking AI crawlers hurt my ChatGPT visibility?

It can. OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot is a separate setting for model training, so you can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot.
