Agentic Commerce Protocol vs Universal Commerce Protocol
ACP and UCP are the two standards AI agents use to browse and buy. If you're on Shopify, the platform already speaks both. Your job is the product data and the page they hand the buyer to.

Two acronyms. One question that keeps landing in my inbox: "Do I need ACP or UCP?"
Here's the short answer. The agentic commerce protocol vs universal commerce protocol debate matters to the people building AI agents and checkout systems. For a Shopify brand, it mostly doesn't. The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) is OpenAI and Stripe's standard, and in 2026 it mostly carries product feeds into ChatGPT. The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is Google and Shopify's standard, and it runs checkout inside Google AI Mode and Gemini. Shopify plugs your store into both through agentic storefronts, which are on by default.
So you don't pick one. You feed both. And the feed is your product data.
If you're on Shopify, the protocol is the pipe. You're in charge of what flows through it.
What is the Agentic Commerce Protocol?
ACP came first. Stripe and OpenAI announced it on September 29, 2025, alongside Instant Checkout in ChatGPT. The pitch was a shared language so an AI agent could run a purchase without the merchant giving up the customer. Payment rode on a Shared Payment Token, which Stripe says is "scoped to a specific merchant and basket total." The official ACP site lists it as open source under the Apache 2.0 license, developed by Stripe and OpenAI.
OpenAI's commerce docs still describe three parts: agentic checkout, delegated payment, and product feeds. The first step they tell merchants to take? "Start your ACP integration by sharing a structured product feed."
That tells you where the weight sits now.
In March 2026, OpenAI rebuilt ChatGPT shopping around discovery: visual browsing, side-by-side comparison with price and reviews, and an expanded ACP that carries product feeds and promotions. Shopifreaks reported that Target, Sephora, Nordstrom, Lowe's, Best Buy, The Home Depot and Wayfair had already plugged in, and that Shopify merchants participate through Shopify Catalog with no extra setup. Checkout moved back to the merchant. We covered that whole reversal in what happened to ChatGPT Instant Checkout.
What is the Universal Commerce Protocol?
UCP is the bigger, younger one. Google and Shopify announced it on January 11, 2026. Google's developer blog calls it "an open-source standard designed to power the next generation of agentic commerce," and names checkout, identity linking and order management as its core jobs.
The UCP site now lists five capabilities: catalog, cart, checkout, identity linking and order management. It runs over REST and JSON-RPC, with support for MCP (Model Context Protocol), A2A (Agent2Agent) and AP2 (Agent Payments Protocol) built in. Same Apache 2.0 license as ACP.
The co-developer list surprised me. Google, Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, Walmart, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Salesforce and Stripe, plus travel and food delivery companies. Visa, Mastercard, Amex and PayPal sit on the endorser list.
Shopify's engineers wrote the design notes, and one detail matters for you. When an agent can't finish a purchase alone, UCP hands the buyer off to a real checkout through a continue_url, and the buyer picks up where the agent stopped. On the Google side, Google's merchant guide says "You remain the Merchant of Record."
UCP was designed to finish the sale. ACP got pulled back to starting it.
ACP vs UCP: what's actually different?
Here's the side-by-side, built only from each protocol's own pages and Shopify's help center.
| Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) | Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) | |
|---|---|---|
| Built by | OpenAI and Stripe | Google and Shopify, with retailers including Walmart, Target, Etsy, Wayfair and Amazon |
| Announced | September 29, 2025 | January 11, 2026 |
| License | Apache 2.0, open source | Apache 2.0, open source |
| Parts | Agentic checkout, delegated payment, product feeds | Catalog, cart, checkout, identity linking, order management |
| Where you see it today | ChatGPT shopping (discovery, comparison, promotions) | Checkout inside Google AI Mode and Gemini |
| Where a Shopify buyer pays | Your own store checkout, in an in-app browser or new tab | Shopify-powered direct checkout inside the chat, if you leave it on |
| Payments | Shared Payment Token, open to other payment providers | AP2 support built in |
| How a Shopify store gets in | Shopify Catalog, through agentic storefronts | Google & YouTube channel or Merchant Center, through agentic storefronts |
| What you actually do | Clean product data | Clean product data, then decide on direct checkout |
Look at the last row. Same answer twice.
That's the part the protocol explainers skip. They compare fees, transports and authentication like you're about to write the integration. You're not. Shopify did. Its January announcement says merchants "set up their data once, and through Shopify's Agentic Storefronts, that data is surfaced everywhere, including ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, and Gemini."
And the payment side has stopped picking sides too. Stripe's agentic commerce docs list the protocol for selling through agents as "UCP or ACP." Both.
Do you need to do anything about ACP or UCP on Shopify?
Not at the protocol level. Shopify's agentic storefronts page says the feature "is active by default for eligible stores," across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta. On selling in ChatGPT, Shopify says there are no fees beyond standard payment processing.
But here's the thing. On by default is not the same as chosen by default.
Both protocols pull from the same well: your product title, description, images, variants, price, policies and reviews. OpenAI's feed best practices ask for "concise, factual copy." Google reads your Merchant Center feed. An agent comparing three moisturizers can only compare what you told it. If your description says "luxurious, silky, game-ready" and the competitor's says "50 ml, vitamin C 15%, fragrance free, for oily skin," the agent quotes the competitor.
So the three jobs are:
- Fill the facts. Size, material, ingredients, fit, who it's for, written plainly in the description field. Our guide to ranking products in ChatGPT walks through which fields agents read. If AI drafts those descriptions for you, run the claim trap from our Claude vs ChatGPT for copywriting tests first, because an invented spec is worse than a missing one.
- Fill the gates. Terms of service, privacy policy, and return and refund policy. Shopify lists all three as requirements for selling in ChatGPT.
- Decide direct checkout. This is the one real UCP decision you own. Shopify's Google AI Mode page says subscriptions and product bundles aren't supported in direct checkout, upsell blocks don't display, and custom pixels won't fire. If your order value lives in checkout add-ons, test it off. The Shopify agentic storefronts setup guide shows exactly where the toggle sits.
Where does the agent hand the buyer off, and why does that matter more?
I'll be honest. I think founders are spending their worry in the wrong place.
The protocols decide how a product gets from your catalog into a chat. They don't decide whether the buyer says yes. In ChatGPT, every Shopify buyer lands on your own product page and checkout. In Google's direct checkout, the buyer skips your page, and so do your upsells.
Either way, the money is decided after the handoff. Run the math on a store like this, a hypothetical: 5,000 visitors a month arriving from AI assistants. The page converts 1.2% at a $68 average order value. That's $0.816 in revenue per visitor, or $4,080 a month. Rebuild the page so it answers the one question the buyer arrived with, and say it lands at 2.4% and $74. That's $1.776 per visitor, or $8,880 a month. Same agents. Same protocols.
Conversion rate x average order value x visitors. 1.2% at $68 vs 2.4% at $74. Not a client result.
Now the real version. One bedding brand's Copper Bamboo Sheets page went from a 1.0% conversion rate and a $125 average order value to 4.3% and $221. Revenue per visitor went from $1.25 to $9.50. On 10,000 visitors, that's $12,500 before and $95,000 after. See the full case study numbers. Real client numbers, not typical results, and not a promise of what your store will do.
No protocol did that. The page did.
The agent shortlists you. Your page gets paid. Nobody's protocol closes the sale for you.
That's why we judge every AI channel on revenue per visitor and not on mentions. If ChatGPT sends you buyers who already compared three options, your page should start where the chat left off. Here's how to write a Shopify product page for ChatGPT traffic.
Will there be one winner between ACP and UCP?
Maybe. I wouldn't bet your Q4 on it.
Right now they overlap more than they fight. Stripe supports both. Shopify routes your catalog to both. Retailers like Target and Wayfair show up on both sides. If one fades, Shopify swaps the pipe and your product data keeps flowing.
What doesn't get swapped is the quality of what's in the pipe. A thin product description loses in ChatGPT and loses in Gemini. A page that can't close leaks money no matter which agent sent the click. Bleeding pages stay bleeding under any acronym. Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the Agentic Commerce Protocol and the Universal Commerce Protocol? ACP is OpenAI and Stripe's standard, now mostly feeding product data into ChatGPT. UCP is Google and Shopify's standard, covering catalog through order management, with checkout live in Google AI Mode and Gemini.
Do Shopify merchants need to set up ACP or UCP? Usually no. Agentic storefronts are on by default, and Shopify surfaces your data in both. Your work is product data, policies and the page.
Is UCP replacing ACP? No. Both are open source and still published, and Stripe supports both.
Who created the Universal Commerce Protocol? Google and Shopify, announced January 11, 2026, with co-developers now including Walmart, Target, Etsy, Wayfair, Amazon, Microsoft and Meta.
Does ChatGPT still let shoppers buy inside the chat? Not for Shopify stores. The buyer finishes on your own store checkout.
What to do next
Pull up your best seller's product description right now. Count the facts in it, the things a buyer could check: size, material, quantity, who it's for. If you count fewer than 6, rewrite that one description before you read another word about protocols.
One product. Six facts. Both protocols carry it the same day.
Book Your Profit Audit
ACP and UCP decide how AI agents find your products, but the buyer they send still has to say yes on your page. Get your free profit audit and we'll show you where your hero page leaks those buyers, then show you how to rebuild a high-converting product sales page in less than 15 minutes.

P.S. Founders are arguing about which pipe wins. The stores that get paid are the ones with something worth sending through it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the Agentic Commerce Protocol and the Universal Commerce Protocol?
The Agentic Commerce Protocol was built by OpenAI and Stripe and today mostly carries product feeds into ChatGPT. The Universal Commerce Protocol was co-developed by Google and Shopify and covers catalog, cart, checkout, identity linking and order management, with checkout live in Google AI Mode and Gemini.
Do Shopify merchants need to set up ACP or UCP?
Usually no. Shopify says agentic storefronts are active by default for eligible stores and that you set up your data once and it surfaces in ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini. Your work is product data, store policies and the product page.
Is UCP replacing ACP?
No. Both are open source under Apache 2.0 and both are still published. Stripe lists UCP or ACP as the protocol for selling through agents, so payment providers are supporting both side by side.
Who created the Universal Commerce Protocol?
Google and Shopify announced it on January 11, 2026. The ucp.dev site now lists co-developers including Etsy, Wayfair, Target, Walmart, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta and Stripe.
Does ChatGPT still let shoppers buy inside the chat?
Not for Shopify stores. Shopify's help center calls ChatGPT a discovery-focused referrer, and the buyer completes the purchase on your own store checkout in an in-app browser or a new tab.
