Holiday Email Subject Lines: 60 Patterns for Q4 2026

In a Q4 inbox, the subject line that names the offer and the deadline beats the clever one. Here are 60 patterns grouped by campaign stage, from the first tease to the last gift card.

A navy phone screen glowing in the dark, a stack of identical inbox rows with one row lit in orange showing a price and a date.

I used to write subject lines like riddles. "You're going to want to see this." "Something's coming." I thought curiosity was the whole game.

Then I watched a riddle lose to "25% off, ends Monday" on Black Friday morning, and it wasn't close.

Here's the short answer. The best holiday email subject lines name a specific offer and a specific deadline. Clever loses in Q4 because the shopper isn't curious. She's comparing. She has 40 sale emails stacked on her phone and she's picking the two or three that tell her what she gets and how long she has.

Below are 60 patterns, grouped by campaign stage. Every one carries a price, a product or a date. Decide the number before you write the line, because the right Black Friday discount percentage comes out of your margin, not the inbox.

Why does a specific offer beat a clever subject line in Q4?

Because in November, a subject line works like a price tag on a shelf. Nobody stops at a shelf to solve a puzzle.

Omnisend's guide to Black Friday subject lines puts the visible length on mobile at about 33 characters and the sweet spot at five to seven words. That's your whole billboard. "You won't believe what we're doing this year" burns all 33 characters and says nothing. "25% off merino socks, ends Monday" fits and sells.

A riddle asks the shopper to do work. A price tag does the work for her. In a Q4 inbox, she'll only open the one that already did it.

And there's a new reader in the inbox now. In January, Google started rolling out AI Overviews in Gmail, free for U.S. users in English, which summarize email conversations so people don't have to read every message. A vague subject plus a buried offer gives the summary nothing to say. A plain offer and a date survive any summary.

Gmail's Promotions tab deal annotations even put a badge with the discount code or offer details next to your subject line. The inbox itself is pushing the offer to the front.

What should holiday email subject lines say at each stage?

Each stage has one job. Here's what every subject line in that window must name.

Stage Dates (2026) The subject line must name
The tease Nov 13 to 22 The date the sale opens
Early access Nov 23 to 26 The offer, plus "first"
Black Friday Fri, Nov 27 The offer and when it ends
The weekend Nov 28 to 29 What's left and the clock
Cyber Monday Mon, Nov 30 to Tue, Dec 1 A new offer or a hard deadline
Gift season Dec 2 to 18 The ship-by date
Last minute and after Dec 19 to Jan 2 Gift cards, then the year-end clearout

Every example below is written for one hypothetical store: a merino wool sock brand selling a $24 pair, a $62 three-pack and a $79 gift box. Swap in your own product and numbers.

The 60 patterns, by campaign stage

The tease (Nov 13 to 22)

No discount yet. Teach the list the date. Still building it? Start with my guide to growing your email list before Black Friday.

  1. Date drop: Our sale opens Nov 23. Mark it.
  2. The invite: Want first pick on Nov 23?
  3. The restock: The gift box is back on Nov 23
  4. What's included, no prices: What's in this year's sale (no prices yet)
  5. The buyer question: Shopping for you or for a gift?
  6. The count: 4 socks going on sale Nov 23
  7. Reply bait: Which color should we bring back?
  8. Last year's lesson: The gift box sold out last year. Here's the date.

Early access (Nov 23 to 26)

She raised her hand weeks ago. Give her "first" and a clock.

  1. Doors open: Early access is live: 25% off till Thursday
  2. Ahead of everyone: You're in: 25% off, 4 days before everyone
  3. Product plus price: Merino 3-pack, $62, now $46.50 for you
  4. The countdown: Early access closes Thursday at 9pm
  5. Saved size: Your size is in stock: 25% off till Thursday
  6. Gifts done early: Finish your gifts by Thursday, 25% off
  7. Plain reminder: Reminder: your 25% off ends tomorrow

Black Friday (Nov 27)

The offer goes in the first 30 characters, every time.

  1. Offer plus deadline: 25% off everything, ends Monday
  2. Dollars, not percent: $15.50 off the merino 3-pack today

  9. Evening of: Still deciding? 25% off ends Monday

Cyber Monday (Nov 30 to Dec 1)

Give Monday its own offer. Omnisend's Black Week 2025 data showed orders up 36% year over year, so Monday deserves more than a "still on" reminder.

  2. New bundle: Today only: 3-pack for the price of 2
  3. Hard clock: Ends at midnight: 30% off

Gift season (Dec 2 to 18)

The carrier's deadline is the most honest urgency you have. Pair these with a holiday gift guide on your Shopify store.

  1. Ship-by date: Order by Dec 17 for Christmas delivery
  2. The person: For the dad who's always cold: $24
  3. Price band plus date: 12 gifts under $40, ships by Dec 17
  4. Wrapped: Gift-wrapped and shipped free till Dec 17
  5. Stocking stuffer: Stocking stuffers from $14

  9. The stuck shopper: Still stuck on your brother? $24 fixes it.
  10. The countdown: 5 days left for Christmas shipping

Last minute and after (Dec 19 to Jan 2)

After the ship-by date, switch to gift cards, then clear out.

  1. Last shipping day: Last day for delivery by Dec 24
  2. Too late to ship: Too late to ship? Gift card in 2 minutes
  3. Christmas Eve: A gift card, delivered tonight
  4. The thank you: Thank you. No sale in this one.
  5. Day after: Dec 26: 30% off what's left
  6. Gift card holders: Got a gift card? 3 new colors just landed
  7. Exchanges: Wrong size? Free exchanges till Jan 31
  8. New year: New year, warm feet: 20% off till Jan 3
  9. Leftover gift boxes: 41 gift boxes left at $49
  10. Year end: Last sale of 2026 ends Friday

How much is a better subject line actually worth?

Here's the thing. A subject line earns an open. The open earns a click. And the click lands on a product page that decides what all of it was worth.

Run the math on a store like this, a hypothetical. 40,000 subscribers get the Black Friday email. The riddle subject gets a 2.0% click rate, so 800 people land on the page. The offer plus deadline subject gets 2.6%, so 1,040 land.

The page converts at 3.0% with a $62 average order value. That means revenue per visitor is $1.86. Riddle: 800 clicks, $1,488. Offer plus deadline: 1,040 clicks, $1,934. A $446 win from one line of text. Nice.

Now watch what happens when the page gets fixed too. Conversion rate 5.5%, average order value $74 because the page pushes the 3-pack. Revenue per visitor $4.07. The same 1,040 clicks now bring in $4,233.

The subject line moved the number by $446. The page moved it by $2,299.

You can win the inbox and still lose the sale. The subject line gets her through the door. The page decides if she leaves with anything.

And a real one. A bedding client's Copper Bamboo Sheets page went from a 1.0% conversion rate and $125 average order value to 4.3% and $221. Revenue per visitor moved from $1.25 to $9.50. On 10,000 visitors, that's $12,500 against $95,000. You can see the full case study numbers. Real client numbers, not typical results, and not a promise of what your store will do.

So read the page your Black Friday email links to like a cold clicker would. I wrote up how to write a Shopify product page for email traffic for exactly that.

How should you use AI to write holiday subject lines?

Use it for volume, then judge with one rule.

Ask your AI tool for 20 Black Friday subject lines for your hero product. You'll get 15 riddles and 5 usable lines. Keep only the ones with a number or a date inside the first 33 characters. Then test the top two on a slice of your list in October, when a loser costs you nothing. My notes on what to test and what to freeze around Black Friday cover the timing.

I'd skip any tool that claims to predict your November open rate. It can't see your list.

What mistakes sink Christmas email subject lines?

Three, and I see them every December.

Selling a physical gift after the ship-by date. She orders Dec 21, it lands Dec 28, you eat the return.

One pattern for six weeks. By Cyber Monday, "25% off, ends Monday" is wallpaper. Rotate: dollars, a bundle, a hard clock.

Shouting. ALL CAPS and three fire emojis look like every other brand in the Promotions tab.

The deadline is the most honest thing in a holiday email. Don't hide it in the body.

If your flows are still sending a welcome discount in the middle of all this, fix that first. Here's how I set up Klaviyo flows for Shopify, and the full send-by-send plan lives in my Black Friday email campaign ideas calendar.

P.S. A riddle in the inbox makes her think. A price tag makes her click. Make sure the page behind it is ready to close.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good holiday email subject line?

A good holiday email subject line names the offer and the deadline in plain words, like 25% off everything, ends Monday. In a Q4 inbox full of near-identical sale emails, the shopper picks the one that tells them what they get and how long they have, without opening anything.

How long should Black Friday subject lines be?

Aim for five to seven words and put the offer in the first 30 characters. Omnisend puts the visible length on mobile at about 33 characters, so anything important that sits after that point may never be seen.

When should Christmas email subject lines mention shipping deadlines?

Start naming the shipping cutoff date about a week before it hits, then count down to it. Once your last ship-by-Christmas date passes, switch every subject line to gift cards or delivery-free gifts, because a physical product offer after the cutoff just creates refund requests.

What are good Cyber Monday subject lines?

Good Cyber Monday subject lines give Monday its own offer instead of repeating Friday's. Try a new number (30% off instead of 25%), a bundle (3-pack for the price of 2), or a hard clock (ends at midnight). Omnisend's Black Week 2025 data showed orders up 36% year over year, so Monday is worth its own send.

Do Gmail's AI summaries change how I should write subject lines?

Yes. Gmail now shows AI-written summaries to U.S. users for free, so the subject line and the first lines of your email both feed what the reader sees. Write the subject and opening sentence so a summary of them still says the offer and the deadline.
