Google Shopping Feed: 14 Fixes Ranked by Impact

Your Shopping ads stalled and the bid changes did nothing. That's because Google picks products from your feed before it ever looks at your bid. Here are the 14 feed fixes that matter, in the order I'd do them.

Part of the guide Ecommerce Traffic Strategy: Meta, Google Shopping, Affiliates, PR →
A navy dashboard of product feed rows with the title column glowing orange while a bid slider sits greyed out to the side.

I used to think Shopping ads were a bidding game. Raise the bid on the winners, cut the losers, repeat. Took me an embarrassing amount of ad spend to learn that Google decides which searches your product can even enter before your bid shows up.

So here's the short answer. Google Shopping feed work means fixing the product data you send to Merchant Center (titles, GTINs, product types, images, highlights and labels) so Google can match each product to the right searches. It beats bid work because Google can't bid you into a search it never matched you to. And since the same Merchant Center data now feeds Google AI Mode, the feed decides where you show in both places.

If your bid changes did nothing last month, that's the tell. You were turning a dial on a machine with no fuel in it.

Why did my bid changes do nothing?

Because bids only work on the auctions you're already eligible for.

Think about what Google actually knows about your product. It knows what you told it in the feed. If your title says "The Cloud Duvet" and the shopper searched "lightweight bamboo duvet cover queen," Google has to guess. Usually it guesses no. Your bid sits there, ready to fight for a search you'll never see.

A bid is a volume knob. The feed is the station you're tuned to. Turn the knob all you want on the wrong station.

Here's the thing most founders miss. The Shopify app pushes your store titles straight into Merchant Center. Those titles were written for a brand page, not a search box. Cute names, no product type, no size, no material. That's a feed Google can't read, and you're paying to advertise it.

What are the 14 Google Shopping feed fixes, ranked by impact?

This is my ranking, from what decides whether you show at all down to what fine-tunes the money once you do. Every rule below comes from Google's own help pages, linked in each row's section.

1 Clear disapprovals and warnings Diagnostics Whether the product serves at all
2 Rewrite titles, front-loaded title Which searches you match
3 Add correct GTINs gtin Visibility and product matching

12 Override with a supplemental source Supplemental data Titles without touching your store
13 Tag AI-written titles correctly structured_title Staying inside Google's rules
14 Match the landing page Your product page Whether the click pays

Now the why behind each.

Which fixes decide whether you show up at all?

1. Clear disapprovals first. A disapproved product earns zero, no matter how good the title is. Open Merchant Center diagnostics, sort by item count, and fix the issue hitting the most products first.

2. Titles. This is the big one. Google allows 1-150 characters for a title and says users "will usually notice only the first 70 or fewer characters." So the formula is product type, brand if it helps, then the detail that decides the sale. "The Cloud Duvet" becomes "Bamboo Duvet Cover Queen, Lightweight Cooling, Sage Green." Same product. Now it can enter a search.

3. GTINs. Google's wording is blunt: products with missing or incorrect GTINs "may have limited visibility," and including the right one "can increase the performance of the product." But never guess. Google says when in doubt, leave it out. A made-up barcode is worse than an empty field.

4. The main image. Minimum 500 x 500 pixels, but Google recommends 1500 x 1500 or above, with the product filling 75% to 90% of the frame. No watermarks, no "Buy Now" text, no borders. Those look cheap, and they also break the rules.

5. The variant in the title. Google tells you to distinguish variants by adding color, size or flavor to the title. A shopper typing "king" doesn't want to click your queen. Put it in words.

Which fixes sharpen the match once you're showing?

6. Description. You get up to 5,000 characters, but Google says to put the most important details in the first 160 to 500. Material, size, the problem it solves. No prices, no shipping promos, no competitor comparisons.

7. Product type. Use the full breadcrumb path, like "Home > Bedding > Duvet Covers > Bamboo." Google says you can organize Shopping campaigns by these values, so a clean path is also a clean account.

8. Google product category. Pick the deepest one that fits. "Bedding" is a drawer. "Duvet covers" is the right shelf.

9. Product highlights. Two to 100 allowed, four to six recommended, 150 characters each. Write benefits, not specs, and don't repeat the title.

10. Custom labels by margin. You get five custom labels for bidding and reporting, and shoppers never see them. Put a margin band in one. Now you can push budget toward the products that make money instead of the ones that just make revenue. Bleeding margin on a best seller versus printing profit on a quieter SKU: the labels show you which is which.

How does your feed decide what shows in Google AI Mode?

This is where the AI shift lands. It's the same shift behind agentic commerce: an AI reads your data and builds the shortlist before a buyer ever clicks.

Google lists six conversational attributes (question and answer, document link, related product, item group title, variant option and popularity rank) built so customers find your products "across AI-driven surfaces, like AI Mode in Search." They're optional. They don't touch approval status. And in September, Google said that in a test with lululemon, "conversational attributes submitted from the brand were incorporated 50% of the time in relevant product recommendations in AI Mode," according to its holiday shopping update.

11. Answer buyer questions. Start with question and answer. Pull the five questions your support inbox gets most and write the plain answer. I covered the full AI Mode setup in how Google AI Mode shopping picks products.

12. Use a supplemental data source. Founders in the Shopify Community keep hitting the same wall: change the Shopping title and the store title changes too. The fix is a supplemental data source. It updates attributes on existing products by ID. It can't add or remove products, so it's safe.

13. Tag AI-written titles. If an AI tool wrote your titles, Google wants them in the structured title attribute, marked as generated, instead of the plain title field. AI can draft 300 titles in an afternoon. Just file them where Google asks.

And how do you know any of it is working? Merchant Center now has an AI performance report for AI Mode and AI Overviews (English queries in the U.S., Canada, Australia, India and New Zealand). Its advice: add search terms to titles and descriptions, and fill missing attributes. That's this list.

The feed is the only thing AI Mode knows about your product. Write it like you're briefing a salesperson, because you are.

Why is the landing page fix number 14 and the most expensive one to skip?

14. Match the landing page. Google says the title should describe the product on your landing page. That's the rule. Here's the money.

The feed earns the click. The page earns the order. Run the math on a store like this (a hypothetical): 10,000 Shopping clicks a month, a conversion rate of 1.5% and an average order value of $80. That's $1.20 in revenue per visitor, or $12,000.

Fix the feed so the clicks are better matched, and say the conversion rate climbs to 2.1%. At $80, that's $1.68 per visitor and $16,800. Now fix the page too: 3.0% conversion rate, $96 average order value with a bundle. That's $2.88 per visitor. On the same 10,000 clicks, $28,800.

Here's what that page fix looked like on a real store. A bedding brand's Cooling Bamboo Sheets went from a 1.0% conversion rate at a $125 average order value ($1.25 per visitor) to 4.3% at $254, which is $10.92 in revenue per visitor. Real client numbers, not typical results, and not a promise of what your store will do.

Bedding is a Shopping category, by the way. Same clicks. The page did the rest. I break down what that page needs in how to write a Shopify product page for Google Shopping traffic.

What should you watch out for when you change the feed?

Google warns that editing IDs, titles, descriptions or product identifiers may cause performance fluctuations. So don't rewrite 400 titles on a Tuesday and panic on Wednesday. Change your top 20 products first. Leave item IDs alone. Watch the Item ID report for two weeks, then roll the rest.

And one honest caveat. If a product loses on price by $30, no title saves it. Feed work gets you into the right auctions. It doesn't fix an offer nobody wants.

Frequently asked questions

Should I fix my Google Shopping feed or my bids first? Fix the feed first. Google matches products to searches using your titles, identifiers, categories and images, so a bid change can't put a product in front of a search it was never matched to.

How long should Google Shopping product titles be? Up to 150 characters, but shoppers usually notice only the first 70 or fewer. Put the product type, brand and deciding detail there.

Do GTINs matter for Google Shopping? Yes, when your product has one. Missing or incorrect GTINs may limit visibility. Never guess one.

Does my Merchant Center feed affect Google AI Mode? Yes. Google built conversational attributes for AI-driven surfaces like AI Mode, and its AI performance report tells you to fill missing attributes.

Can I change Shopping titles without changing my Shopify titles? Yes. Use a supplemental data source in Merchant Center keyed by product ID.

What to do next

Export your top 20 products by Shopping spend. Read only the first 70 characters of each title out loud. If you can't tell what the product is, what size it is and who it's for, rewrite that title in a supplemental source this week. Then read the full ecommerce traffic strategy to see where Shopping fits next to Meta, and how AI Max for Search is starting to write ads from your page too.

Frequently asked questions

Should I fix my Google Shopping feed or my bids first?

Fix the feed first. Google matches products to searches using your titles, identifiers, categories and images, so a bid change can't put a product in front of a search it was never matched to. Once the feed is clean, bid changes have something to work with.

How long should Google Shopping product titles be?

Google allows up to 150 characters and says shoppers usually notice only the first 70 or fewer, depending on screen size. So use the room, but put the product type, brand and the detail that decides the sale in those first 70 characters.

Do GTINs matter for Google Shopping?

Yes, when your product has one. Google says products with missing or incorrect GTINs may have limited visibility. Never guess a GTIN, though. Google's own rule is that a wrong one is worse than none.

Does my Merchant Center feed affect Google AI Mode?

Yes. Google built six conversational attributes for AI-driven surfaces like AI Mode, and its Merchant Center AI performance report tells merchants to add missing attributes and search terms to titles and descriptions. The feed is what AI Mode reads about your product.

Can I change Google Shopping titles without changing my Shopify product titles?

Yes. Add a supplemental data source in Merchant Center keyed by product ID and put your new titles there. It updates the attributes Google sees without touching your store or adding new products.
