Google Product Studio: Free AI Images for Shopping Ads
Google Product Studio fixes weak Shopping images for free, right inside Merchant Center. Here's what it does today, where it's not available, the image rules that still apply, and the slot I'd never hand to it.

A founder sent me his Shopping ads last month. A ceramic pour-over coffee set, $64, shot on a kitchen counter with a toaster in the corner and a phone flash bouncing off the glaze. His question was whether he needed a $2,000 photo shoot before he scaled the campaign.
Short answer: no. Not for the feed, anyway.
Google Product Studio is a free set of AI tools inside Google Merchant Center (and inside the Google & YouTube app on Shopify) that removes backgrounds, increases image resolution, puts your product into a new scene, creates images from a prompt and turns photos into short videos. You pick a product, run the tool, review the output, and save it straight back to that product in Merchant Center. For a feed full of weak phone photos, it's the fastest image fix Google gives you, and it costs nothing.
But it has rules, gaps and one slot I'd never hand to it. That's what this post is about.
What does Google Product Studio actually do in 2026?
Google first announced Product Studio in May 2023 as a way to "create product imagery using generative AI." The toolset has grown since. Here's what Google's own Product Studio help page for Merchant Center lists today, which I checked this week because this product changes fast:
| Tool | What it does | Where I'd use it |
|---|---|---|
| Remove background | Leaves only the product on a white background | Main Shopping image |
| Increase resolution | Increases the quality and size of an existing image | Main image, old low-res shots |
| Change background | Creates up to four images of your product in a scene you describe | Additional or lifestyle images |
| Create images | Generates images from a text prompt, with up to 3 uploaded images or Merchant Center products | Concept tests, seasonal shots |
| Animate images | Turns a still photo into short videos, 4 per run | Video assets for ads |
| Generate video | Turns product images into videos | Video assets (6 countries only) |
One naming note so you don't go hunting. Older articles call the scene tool "generate scene." The current Merchant Center help page calls it "Change background." The Shopify version of the help page still says generate scenes. Same idea.
Who can use Merchant Center Product Studio, and where?
Google's help page says Product Studio is available to all Merchant Center users except those based in Russia and France. The video generator is narrower: Australia, Canada, India, Japan, the UK and the US only.
Language matters too. Google says scene descriptions work best in ten languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Dutch, Italian, Polish, Portuguese and Russian.
And there are product limits that catch people:
- It works best with a single main product and no hands, props or people in the shot.
- Wall art and light fixtures aren't supported.
- Regulated goods are out: alcohol, tobacco, weapons, pharmaceuticals, health and medical devices, gambling products and fireworks.
- If a product already has 70 images, you can't save a new one.
- Google calls the feature experimental and warns it "may generate unexpected images and videos."
So if you sell supplements in a gray zone or you're a wine brand, stop here. This tool isn't for you yet.
How do you use Product Studio from Shopify?
If your feed runs through Shopify, you don't need to log into Merchant Center at all. Google's Shopify help page says to open the Google & YouTube app, pick Product Studio from the navigation and choose "Get started" on the card for the job you want.
Here's the order I'd run it on the coffee set, or on anything shot on a counter:
- Pick your top 10 products by Shopping spend.
- Run increase resolution on any main image under 1500 x 1500.
- Run remove background on every main image with clutter.
- Save those as the main image.
- Generate two scenes per product and save them as additional images.
That's an afternoon. Not a shoot.
A cluttered photo in a Shopping grid gets scrolled past before anyone reads the price. Clean the image first. Argue about bids later.
What are Google's image rules for AI images in Shopping ads?
Here's the part most "free AI tool" posts skip. Product Studio sits inside Merchant Center, but the image link rules still apply to whatever you save.
The ones that matter:
- AI metadata stays on. Google says all images created using generative AI must contain metadata indicating that the image was AI-generated, and you must not remove embedded tags such as the IPTC DigitalSourceType property. Watch this if you run images through a compressor or a CDN that strips metadata.
- Size. At least 500 x 500 pixels, with 1500 x 1500 or above recommended.
- Framing. The product should take up no less than 75% and no more than 90% of the image.
- No overlays. No promotional text, watermarks or borders on the main image.
- Lifestyle has its own slot. In-context shots can go in the lifestyle image link attribute, and extra angles in additional image link.
Now my opinion. Google lets you tick "use this image as your main" on a generated scene. I wouldn't. The main image is the one Google judges hardest and the one a shopper compares side by side with five competitors. A clean, sharp, true-to-life product on white wins that grid. Scenes are for the second swipe, where a buyer wants to see the thing in a kitchen.
And one more honest line. If the generated scene makes your $64 coffee set look like a $300 one, you've built a return, not a sale. Product Studio's own help page warns that outputs can be inaccurate. Look at every image before you save it.
Do better Shopping images mean more sales?
Better images can earn more clicks. They can't close the order. That happens on your product page.
Here's the math. Run it on a store like this (a hypothetical): 10,000 Shopping clicks a month, a conversion rate of 1.4% and an average order value of $70. That's 1.4% x $70 = $0.98 in revenue per visitor, or $9,800 a month.
Product Studio can make those clicks cheaper or better matched. But say the clicks land on a product page that's a spec sheet. Same 1.4%. Same $9,800.
Now fix the page. Say the conversion rate climbs to 2.5% and a bundle lifts the average order value to $88. That's 2.5% x $88 = $2.20 in revenue per visitor. On the same 10,000 clicks, $22,000.
Conversion rate x average order value x clicks. Hypothetical numbers for illustration only.
Here's the thing. The image gets you into the room. The page does the talking.
I've watched this on a real store. A bedding brand's Adjustable Pillows page went from a 1.0% conversion rate and a $125 average order value ($1.25 in revenue per visitor) to a 4.4% conversion rate and a $152 average order value, which is $6.68 in revenue per visitor. On 10,000 visitors, that's $66,800 instead of $12,500. Real client numbers, not typical results, and not a promise of what your store will do. Same pillows. Same photos people had already seen. The page changed.
Product Studio fixes what a shopper sees in the ad. It does nothing for what they read after the click. That's where the money leaks.
When should you skip Product Studio and pay for photos?
I'm a fan of the tool for feed hygiene. But there are three cases where I'd still pay a photographer:
- Your product is the texture. Bedding, apparel, skincare. A buyer wants the real weave, the real drape, the real swatch. AI scenes smooth that away.
- Your product page hero. Your Shopping image and your page hero don't have to match. The page hero carries the whole story, and I covered how AI images can hurt trust there.
- Your product is regulated or excluded. No point fighting the tool.
If you want to compare Product Studio to paid tools for the page itself, I ranked them in the best AI product photo generators for Shopify. And if you also sell on Amazon, the same "fix the images without a reshoot" logic applies to your listing:
Where does Product Studio fit in your Google Shopping plan?
Images are one line in the feed. Titles, GTINs and product types decide which searches you even enter, and I ranked all of it in 14 Google Shopping feed fixes. Image fixes sit around number four on that list. Big, but not first.
Then the campaign type. If you're deciding between Performance Max and Standard Shopping, both run on your Merchant Center product data, so a clean image is never wasted work.
And the page. Read how to write a Shopify product page for Google Shopping traffic before you scale spend. Shopping buyers arrive comparing prices across tabs, and the page has to answer why yours.

Google's Merchant Center help page says it's available to all Merchant Center users except those based in Russia and France. The video generator is narrower: Australia, Canada, India, Japan, the UK and the US only.
Can I use AI-generated images in Google Shopping ads?
Yes, but Google's image rules say every image made with generative AI must carry metadata showing it was AI-generated, and you can't strip tags like the IPTC DigitalSourceType property. The main image also still has to show the actual product cleanly, with no promotional text, watermarks or borders.
Should a Product Studio scene be my main Shopping image?
I wouldn't start there. Use remove background and increase resolution on the main image, because that slot has strict rules, and put generated scenes in additional or lifestyle image slots where Google expects in-context shots.
