Rebuy vs AfterSell: Which Upsell App Pays for Itself?

Rebuy starts in the cart. AfterSell starts after the payment. Here's how the two upsell apps compare on price, testing and AI today, what changed on AfterSell's App Store listing, and the holdout test that shows which one pays for itself.

Two glowing upsell offers on a dark navy checkout screen, one orange and one slate, with a receipt and a calculator between them.

Most Rebuy vs AfterSell comparisons online are quoting prices and listings that moved months ago.

So here's the short answer, checked today. Rebuy is the better pick if you want one AI-driven upsell system across the cart, search and post-purchase, and you're fine paying per package as your orders grow. AfterSell is the better pick if the page after checkout is your main lever and you want the deepest offer testing there. At 500 orders a month, Rebuy's cart and post-purchase packages cost $63 together after its bundle discount. AfterSell's Complete plan costs $79.99. I opened both vendors' pages on October 15, 2026.

And one thing to know before you install anything. When I opened AfterSell's Shopify App Store listing this morning, it read: "This app is not currently available on the Shopify App Store." The AfterSell pricing page still lists every plan with a 30-day free trial. Neither page says why. If AfterSell is your pick, ask Rokt how a new store installs it today before you plan a launch around it.

What's the real difference between Rebuy and AfterSell?

They start from opposite ends of the order.

Rebuy starts in the cart. Its App Store listing leads with AI-powered recommendations and search, and it sells four packages: Cart & Merchandising, Checkout & Post-Purchase, Search & Collections, and Flows & A/B Testing. The Smart Cart is the wedge. Post-purchase is one package out of four.

AfterSell starts after the payment. Rokt announced it was buying AfterSell on January 10, 2024. Its post-purchase plan sells Smart Funnels that "test 6,000+ offer combinations and serve each shopper the one most likely to convert." It has since added a cart (the Pre-Purchase plan) to fight Rebuy on its home turf.

Here's the thing. Both apps now claim the whole order. Each one is still best at the end it started from.

How do Rebuy and AfterSell compare side by side?

Every number below comes from the vendor's own page or its App Store listing, opened today.

Top of the range Platform One (every package) from $534/month, priced by orders Post-Purchase caps at $999.99, Complete caps at $1,359.99

Two rows in that table matter more than the rest.

First, testing. Rebuy keeps A/B testing in its own $35 package, so the cheap version of Rebuy can't tell you which offer wins. AfterSell puts testing inside each plan.

Second, the post-purchase slot. Shopify's help center says "You can use only one checkout app to add post-purchase features at a time," on Basic Shopify or higher. So Rebuy's Smart Cart plus AfterSell after checkout is allowed. Two post-purchase apps is not.

One caveat on Rebuy. The Rebuy pricing page data describes Checkout & Post-Purchase as built "for Shopify Plus," while its plan builder marks only the checkout extensions as Plus-exclusive. On a standard plan, confirm before you pay.

Both apps now claim the whole order. Pick the one that's best at the end of the order where your store actually leaks.

What does each app cost at 500 orders a month?

Run the math on a store like this, a hypothetical supplements brand. 25,000 visitors a month, conversion rate 2%, so 500 orders. Average order value $64. Revenue per visitor is 2% x $64, which is $1.28. On 25,000 visitors, that's $32,000 a month.

Now the bills, using each vendor's 500-order price.

Rebuy cart plus post-purchase: $45 + $25 = $70, minus the 10% two-package discount, so $63. Want Rebuy's A/B testing too? Add Flows & A/B Testing at $35. That's $105, minus the 20% three-package discount, so $84.

AfterSell Complete is $79.99 for 500 orders and bundles the cart, post-purchase offers, Smart Funnels and testing.

So the gap is $16.99 one way or $4.01 the other. That's lunch money.

The fee is the small number in this decision. The big number is how much of the upsell revenue each dashboard shows you would have happened anyway.

Which upsell app actually pays for itself?

The one whose extra revenue you can prove.

Both dashboards count every yes. Neither vendor's page mentions a holdout group, meaning a slice of buyers who see no offer at all. Without that slice, a dashboard can't tell a sale the offer made from a reorder that was coming next month anyway.

Watch what happens on the supplements store. The post-purchase offer is a $24 bottle of magnesium gummies. 8% of 500 buyers say yes. That's 40 bottles, and the dashboard reports $960.

Then you run a holdout. The buyers who never saw the offer show that 12 of those 40 would have bought the gummies on their next order. So the offer really added 28 bottles. $672.

Is $672 enough? At a 60% gross margin, it's $403.20 of gross profit. Against AfterSell's $79.99, that clears the fee about 5 times. Against Rebuy's $63, about 6.4 times. Either app pays for itself here.

My rule is simple. Keep an upsell app only if the holdout-measured gross profit clears three times the monthly fee. Below that, you're paying for a dashboard that flatters you. The same pulled-forward trap hides inside discount offers, which is why BOGO vs percent off counts the reorders a free second unit steals from next month.

On the holdout's numbers, average order value moves from $64 to $65.34. Revenue per visitor goes to 2% x $65.34, about $1.31. On the same 25,000 visitors, that's $32,670 (500 orders x $65.34).

When is Rebuy the right pick, and when is AfterSell?

Rebuy fits when buyers stall in the cart. If your Smart Cart, search and product page widgets all need work, one vendor's AI reading your catalog, cart and order history beats stitching three apps together. The listing shows it works with Klaviyo, Recharge, Okendo, Yotpo, Attentive and Tapcart. Expect the bill to climb with every package and every order tier. Our Rebuy alternatives breakdown covers what to use if that bill gets heavy.

AfterSell fits when the page after checkout is your lever. Multivariate testing, Smart Funnels and a 30-day trial make it the stronger post-purchase specialist on paper. The listing status is the risk, so get an answer from Rokt first. If that answer worries you, our AfterSell alternatives list six swaps.

And the mix. Rebuy's cart in front, one post-purchase app behind it. Our cart drawer upsell guide covers what to show in that cart, and the best post-purchase upsell apps for Shopify ranks the full field.

Then there's the thank you page. Rokt Thanks pays $0.30 to $0.80 per order, and AfterSell's "Earn & Save" offer matches those earnings against your subscription for eligible stores (over 1,000 monthly orders, in the US, Canada, Australia or the UK). Rebuy Monetize pays $0.20 to $0.35+ per order. At 500 orders, that's $150 to $400 against $100 to $175.

I'll be honest. I'm not a fan of putting a stranger's ad in front of your happiest customer for 50 cents. Some founders love the free money. Decide on purpose, not by default.

Can an upsell app fix a product page that doesn't sell?

No. Every app in this post works on buyers who already said yes.

In the hypothetical store, 98 of every 100 visitors leave without buying. They never see a cart drawer offer or a post-purchase page. And as we covered in whether cart upsells hurt conversion rate, a crowded cart can make that number worse.

Look at what one product did when the page itself sold the bigger order. One client's product sold on Amazon at a $29.95 average order value and $7.73 net profit per sale. On Shopify, with a rebuilt page and offer, average order value went to $177.75 and net profit per sale to $78.87, after paying for ads and inventory. See the full case study numbers. Real client numbers, not typical results, and not a promise of what your store will do.

That order grew by $147.80. No post-purchase app did it.

That's where RevenueFlows AI points the AI: the headline, the objection answers, the offer and the order of the argument on the product page, the place revenue per visitor is actually decided. Ishan Soni's take after 100+ pages: fix the page that sells the first order, then let Rebuy or AfterSell add a few dollars on top. The full playbook lives in how to increase average order value on Shopify.

An upsell app adds dollars to orders you already won. A product page decides how many orders you win.

FAQ

Is Rebuy or AfterSell better for a Shopify store? Rebuy if the cart is where buyers stall and you want AI recommendations everywhere from one vendor. AfterSell if the post-purchase page is your main lever.

How much do Rebuy and AfterSell cost in 2026? Rebuy packages run $25 to $45 each at the 500-order base, with 10% to 30% off for combining them. AfterSell runs $34.99 to $79.99 a month on its listed plans.

Is AfterSell still on the Shopify App Store? On October 15, 2026, the listing said it's not currently available there. AfterSell's site still sells every plan with a 30-day trial.

Can I use Rebuy and AfterSell together? Yes. Run Rebuy's cart with AfterSell after checkout. Shopify allows only one post-purchase app at a time.

How do I know if an upsell app pays for itself? Run a 10% to 20% holdout for 30 days. Keep the app if the measured gross profit clears three times the fee.

What to do next

Pull your last 30 days of orders and find your price tier on both pages. Then, whichever app you run today, switch on a 10% holdout for the next 30 days. If the measured lift clears three times the fee, keep it and spend your time on the product page. If it doesn't, the app comparison was never your real problem.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rebuy or AfterSell better for a Shopify store?

Rebuy is better when the cart is where buyers stall and you want AI recommendations across cart, search and post-purchase from one vendor. AfterSell is better when the post-purchase page is your main lever and you want multivariate offer testing there. Many stores run Rebuy's cart with one post-purchase app, which Shopify allows.

How much do Rebuy and AfterSell cost in 2026?

Rebuy prices each package by orders: Cart and Merchandising $45, Checkout and Post-Purchase $25, Search and Collections $35, and Flows and A/B Testing $35, each covering up to 500 orders a month, with 10% to 30% off when you combine them. AfterSell's site lists Post-Purchase at $34.99 for 200 orders, Pre-Purchase at $59.99 for 200 orders and Complete at $79.99 for 500 orders.

Is AfterSell still on the Shopify App Store?

When I opened AfterSell's App Store listing on October 15, 2026, it said the app is not currently available on the Shopify App Store. AfterSell's own site still lists every plan with a 30-day free trial, so ask Rokt how a new store installs it today.

Can I use Rebuy and AfterSell together?

Yes, with one limit. Shopify allows only one checkout app to add post-purchase features at a time, so you can run Rebuy's Smart Cart alongside AfterSell's post-purchase offers, but never both apps' post-purchase pages.

How do I know if an upsell app pays for itself?

Hold out 10% to 20% of buyers who see no offer for 30 days, then compare revenue per order between the two groups. Keep the app only if the gross profit on the measured lift clears about three times the monthly fee.
