Shopify Sidekick vs ChatGPT for Store Operations

Shopify Sidekick works inside your admin with your real store data. ChatGPT wins the research and writing outside it. Here's which one gets which job, checked against both vendors' own pages in October 2026.

Part of the guide AI Commerce: Selling Through ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Agents →
A dark navy Shopify admin dashboard on one side and a glowing chat window on the other, joined by a single orange line that runs to a product page.

Shopify Sidekick is the better tool for anything that happens inside your store, because it works with your live admin data and stages changes for you to approve. ChatGPT is the better tool for anything that happens before the store: researching competitors, finding your angle, and writing long copy. Use Sidekick to run the shop. Use ChatGPT to think. And don't expect either one to make your product page sell on its own.

I checked both vendors' own pages this week (October 2026). Both change monthly, so the details below carry dates.

Here's a hot take. Most founders asking "Sidekick or ChatGPT?" want to know which one to cancel. Neither. They do different jobs.

What is Shopify Sidekick, and what can it do in October 2026?

Shopify Sidekick is the AI assistant built into your Shopify admin. Shopify's Sidekick page says it has direct access to your Shopify data, respects your staff permissions, and adapts to your store's language settings. It's included with your Shopify plan, though Shopify adds that features and usage limits vary by plan.

The Sidekick help center page lists what it does today:

It runs on desktop and in the Shopify app, with voice mode and screen sharing. One honest limit sits right on that page: in some stores, Sidekick can't run code.

The pace is fast. Shopify's changelog shows three Sidekick updates on October 28 alone: suggestions that now pull in web search, suggestions that use data from supported apps, and storefront changes that Sidekick drafts and has AI shoppers test before it recommends them. October 23 added images with transparent backgrounds. October 13 added checkout and customer account customization.

Sidekick is the employee who already has the keys. ChatGPT is the consultant you call in.

Where does ChatGPT beat Shopify Sidekick?

Outside the admin. That's where ChatGPT earns its $20.

According to OpenAI's pricing page, ChatGPT runs from Free at $0 to Go at $8, Plus at $20 and Pro from $100 a month. Plus adds expanded deep research, projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs. Search, file uploads and data analysis show up across the plans, with tighter limits on Free.

That stack is built for the work that happens before you touch a product page:

Here's my admission. I trust a chat window for thinking and I don't trust it with the keys. When I want an angle, I argue with ChatGPT or Claude. When I want an order edited, I want the tool that lives inside Shopify and asks before it saves. If you're choosing a writer, I tested that side in Claude vs ChatGPT for copywriting.

Can ChatGPT run my Shopify store now?

Partly. And this is the detail most comparison posts miss.

Shopify has an official plugin for ChatGPT. You install it from ChatGPT (it's not on the Shopify App Store), approve the access level in your Shopify admin, then tag @Shopify in a message. Without the tag, ChatGPT may fall back to general advice.

With it connected, ChatGPT can look up orders, customers, inventory and analytics. With write access, it can add products, create collections, update prices and descriptions, and create percentage-off discount codes. There's no extra Shopify fee for the plugin, and the OpenAI page lists plugins on every ChatGPT plan, Free included.

But the guardrails are tight, and Shopify spells them out:

Shopify's own help page says the plugin isn't a replacement for your admin or Sidekick. Believe them.

Connect ChatGPT to read your store. Let Sidekick change it.

Shopify Sidekick vs ChatGPT: which tool gets which job?

Here's the split I'd use on a $10,000 to $100,000 a month Shopify store, based on what each vendor publishes as of October 2026.

Store job Shopify Sidekick ChatGPT (with Shopify plugin) Pick
Edit an order, refund or cancel Edits orders in plain language, shows changes for review Can look up orders; can't refund, cancel or mark paid Sidekick
Sales and traffic reports Reads store data, runs calculations with code Reads analytics once connected and tagged Sidekick
Automate a repeated task Builds Shopify Flow workflows Not listed Sidekick
Bulk product edits Works inside the admin One item at a time, may stop partway Sidekick
Theme and storefront changes Drafts changes and has AI shoppers test them (Oct 28 update) Edits an unpublished theme copy only Sidekick
Competitor and market research Suggestions now use web search (Oct 28 update) Deep research, search, file uploads ChatGPT
Positioning and buyer psychology Short, task-focused answers Long back-and-forth reasoning ChatGPT
Long-form copy (emails, ads, stories) Writes product descriptions Projects, custom GPTs, long drafts ChatGPT
Cost Included with your Shopify plan, limits vary by plan $0 to $100+ a month, plus your Shopify plan Sidekick

Notice the pattern. Every row where money or live data moves goes to Sidekick. Every row where an idea gets built goes to ChatGPT. If you want to go deeper on asking your store questions in plain English, I broke down the options in AI analytics for Shopify.

Which one writes better product pages?

Neither, out of the box. This is where founders burn the most money.

Both start from the same thin input: the title, the specs, maybe the old description. So both hand you a spec sheet with nicer grammar. "Breathable bamboo fabric. Deep pockets. Cooling finish." True. Dead.

A page sells when it answers the buyer's silent question, the one that stops the click on the Add to Cart button. Why this one over the $40 pair in the next tab? Will it actually keep me cool? What if it pills after three washes? I wrote up why AI copy drifts generic in why AI product descriptions sound generic, and the prompts that fix it in ChatGPT prompts for product descriptions.

Here's the math on why that matters, on a hypothetical store. Run it on your own numbers.

Say a $68 pillow gets 12,000 visitors a month. Conversion rate 1.4%, average order value $68. That means revenue per visitor is $0.95 (1.4% x $68 = $0.952). On 12,000 visitors, that's $11,424 a month.

Now the page answers the three objections and offers a two-pack. Say conversion rate moves to 2.1% and average order value to $79. Revenue per visitor becomes $1.66 (2.1% x $79 = $1.659). On the same 12,000 visitors, that's $19,908.

Same traffic. $8,484 more a month. Sidekick didn't do that and neither did ChatGPT. The page did.

And here's what it looks like when a real page gets rebuilt around the buyer. One bedding client's Cooling Bamboo Sheets went from a conversion rate of 1.0% and average order value of $125 (revenue per visitor $1.25) to a conversion rate of 4.3% and average order value of $254. Revenue per visitor: $10.92. On 10,000 visitors, that's $109,200 instead of $12,500. See the full case study numbers. Real client numbers, not typical results, and not a promise of what your store will do.

How should I use Sidekick and ChatGPT together?

Stack them in order. Data, then thinking, then action.

  1. Ask Sidekick for the data. "Which 3 products got the most sessions last 30 days, and what's the conversion rate on each?" At RevenueFlows AI, Ishan Soni and the team judge every page on revenue per visitor, so ask for that number too.
  2. Take the losers to ChatGPT. Paste the page copy, the top reviews and the competitor pages. Ask what the buyer is afraid of and what the page never says.
  3. Rewrite the page around those answers. Lead with the objection, prove it, then show the offer. Then check every claim the AI wrote against what you can prove.
  4. Bring it back to Sidekick to ship. Updates, Flow automations, the theme draft. Approve each change before it saves.
  5. Measure it in Sidekick 30 days later. Same report, same three products.

One caution on step 4. Shopify builds a review step into both tools: Sidekick shows you changes before applying them, and the ChatGPT plugin asks for confirmation before it changes pages, menus or metafields. Read every one. An assistant that edits fast also breaks things fast.

Is Shopify Sidekick free? It's included with your Shopify plan at no extra cost. Shopify says features and usage limits vary by plan.

Is Shopify Sidekick better than ChatGPT? Inside your store, yes. For research, positioning and long-form writing, ChatGPT wins. Use both.

Can ChatGPT connect to my Shopify store? Yes, through Shopify's official plugin. It reads orders, customers, inventory and analytics, and can add products and update prices, but it can't refund, cancel, change payments or taxes, or edit your live theme.

Can Shopify Sidekick write product descriptions? Yes. Treat it as a first draft and add the buyer's real objections before you publish.

What to do next

Open Sidekick today and type one question: "Which 3 products had the most sessions in the last 30 days, and what's the conversion rate and average order value on each?" Multiply the two for each product. The one with the lowest revenue per visitor and the most traffic is the page you rewrite first, with ChatGPT doing the thinking and Sidekick doing the shipping.

Book Your Profit Audit

Sidekick can show you which page is leaking and ChatGPT can help you think it through, but the page still has to answer the buyer before they leave. P.S. Sidekick runs the store. ChatGPT runs the brainstorm. Only the page closes the sale, so that's where the next hour goes.

Frequently asked questions

What is Shopify Sidekick?

Shopify Sidekick is the AI assistant built into the Shopify admin. It works with your store's data, can edit orders, build Shopify Flow automations, write product descriptions, create images and generate custom apps, and it shows you changes for review before applying them.

Is Shopify Sidekick free?

Sidekick is included with your Shopify plan at no extra cost, according to Shopify's Sidekick page. Shopify also says features and usage limits vary by plan, so a Basic store and a Plus store won't get exactly the same Sidekick.

Is Shopify Sidekick better than ChatGPT?

For jobs inside your store, yes, because Sidekick reads your live admin data and stages changes for your approval. For research, positioning and long-form writing, ChatGPT is the stronger tool. Most founders should use Sidekick for operations and ChatGPT for thinking and drafting.

Can ChatGPT connect to my Shopify store?

Yes. Shopify's official plugin for ChatGPT lets you tag @Shopify to read orders, customers, inventory and analytics, and with write access it can add products and update prices. It can't issue refunds, cancel orders, change payments or taxes, or edit your live theme, and Shopify says it doesn't replace your admin or Sidekick.

Can Shopify Sidekick write product descriptions?

Yes. Shopify's help center lists product descriptions and images among the content Sidekick creates. Treat the output as a first draft: it describes the product well, but you still have to add the buyer's real objections and the reason your price is worth paying.
