Shopify Collabs vs UpPromote: Affiliate Apps Compared

Collabs is free and lives inside your Shopify admin. UpPromote charges a monthly plan plus a cut of affiliate sales, and gives you a marketplace and deeper commission rules for it. Here's the fee math at three sales levels, checked on both listings today.

Part of the guide Ecommerce Traffic Strategy: Meta, Google Shopping, Affiliates, PR →
Two glowing dashboards on a dark navy desk, one slate and one orange, with a thin line of affiliate links flowing into a single orange product page.

Here's my hot take before the table. Most founders pick an affiliate app like they're picking a bank. Then they send it nine creators and wonder why nothing happened.

So let's get the answer on shopify collabs vs uppromote out of the way first. Shopify Collabs is the right start for most stores: free to install, built into your Shopify admin, and the only fee is 2.9% of the commissions it pays out. UpPromote is the right move when you need deeper commission rules (tiers, per-product rates, bonuses), PayPal auto-payouts, customer referrals, or a marketplace where affiliates can find you. You pay for that with a monthly plan plus a cut of every affiliate sale.

I opened both Shopify App Store listings, both pricing pages and Shopify's own Collabs help docs today, October 16, 2026. Every price below comes from those pages.

What does each affiliate app actually give you?

Both apps do the core job. Links, codes, tracking, commissions. The gap shows up in three places: who can find you, how flexible the commission rules are, and how you pay people.

Shopify Collabs is built by Shopify. Its listing showed 4.2 stars from 437 reviews when I checked, and 21% of those reviews were 1 star. UpPromote showed 4.9 stars from 3,891 reviews. That's roughly nine times the merchant feedback.

Shopify Collabs UpPromote
Price to install Free Free plan, then $29.99 / $89.99 / $199.99 a month
Extra fee 2.9% of commissions paid 2% / 1.5% / 1% of approved referral sales on paid plans
Free plan limit None listed Reviews up to $3,000 in referral sales a month
Commission rules Percentage, store-wide or by collection Product commissions, auto-tier commissions, bonuses, custom rules
Payouts Automatic, through your Shopify bill Manual on Free; PayPal auto-payout on Professional and up
Recruiting Application page, direct invites, open access program Registration form, marketplace listing (Growth+), customer referrals (Growth+), multi-level recruiting (Professional+)
Creator search Discovery for creators already in Collabs; new creator signups paused Creator Discovery add-on from $39 a month (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube)
Gifting Send and track gifts through Shopify Gifts on Professional
Plan requirement Any Shopify plan except Starter and Retail None listed
Rating 4.2 (437 reviews) 4.9 (3,891 reviews)

Two rows matter more than the rest. The fee row, because the two apps charge on completely different numbers. And the creator search row, because of one line buried in Shopify's help center.

Why is the Collabs creator network a smaller selling point now?

Collabs used to pitch itself as a place creators came to find brands. Open access programs let any eligible Collabs creator grab an affiliate link for your products without approval, according to Shopify's program docs.

But here's the thing. Shopify's Collabs Network page now carries a note: Collabs "isn't accepting new creator signups at this time." Existing creators can still log in. You can still send direct invites and take applications.

So the pool browsing brands inside Collabs isn't growing. That changes the decision. If you were counting on Collabs to bring creators to you, don't. Treat it as a clean, free back office for creators you recruit yourself.

An affiliate app is a filing cabinet. Nobody ever got rich from a filing cabinet.

Which, to be fair, is how it works with UpPromote too. Its own recruitment data, which I covered in how to recruit affiliates, says only 5 to 10% of affiliate signups come from passive discovery. The marketplace helps. Your outreach does the heavy lifting either way.

How do Shopify Collabs vs UpPromote fees compare at your sales level?

This is where they stop looking alike.

Collabs charges 2.9% on the commission it pays out. Shopify's payments doc gives the example: a $100 sale at 10% commission costs you 29 cents in processing. UpPromote's paid plans charge a percentage of the whole referral sale, on top of the monthly plan, per its pricing page.

Percent of the commission versus percent of the sale. Watch what happens.

Run the math on a store like this, a hypothetical electrolyte drink brand paying affiliates 10% commission. Here's the monthly fee at three levels of affiliate sales:

Affiliate sales a month Collabs (2.9% of 10% commission) UpPromote Growth ($29.99 + 2%) UpPromote Professional ($89.99 + 1.5%) UpPromote Enterprise ($199.99 + 1%)
$5,000 $14.50 $129.99 $164.99 $249.99
$20,000 $58.00 $429.99 $389.99 $399.99
$50,000 $145.00 $1,029.99 $839.99 $699.99

At $20,000 a month in affiliate sales, the cheapest UpPromote plan is Professional at $389.99. Collabs costs $58. That's a $331.99 gap, or $3,983.88 a year. Against Growth, the plan most stores start on, the gap is $371.99.

And under $3,000 a month in referral sales, UpPromote's Free plan costs nothing at all. That's the honest starting point if you want UpPromote's tools without the bill.

I'll admit something. When I first read UpPromote's pricing I assumed the fee was on commissions, same as Collabs. It isn't. Read the fine print on any app that takes a percentage, because "2%" means very different money depending on what it's 2% of.

So when is UpPromote worth the extra money?

When the rules make you more than the fees cost. Three situations where I'd pay it:

You want tiered or per-product commissions. Collabs lets you set a percentage store-wide or by collection. That's it. UpPromote's listing shows product commissions, auto-tier commissions and bonuses. If your margin on a $36 single tub is thin but fat on a $89 bundle, paying 15% on the bundle and 8% on the single steers affiliates toward the order you actually want.

Your affiliates aren't TikTok creators. Collabs creators need to be in the US, Canada or the UK, and the network isn't taking new signups. Bloggers, coupon partners, gym owners and customers who refer friends fit UpPromote's registration form and customer referral program (Growth and up) much better.

You need to pay people without touching your Shopify bill. Collabs rolls commissions into your Shopify bill after a holding period (30 days by default, adjustable from 1 to 90). UpPromote's Professional plan schedules PayPal auto-payouts. Some partners care a lot about that.

Pay for commission rules you'll actually use. A tier you never set up is a $371.99 monthly donation.

UpPromote also leans hardest into AI right now. Its listing promotes putting "AI to work on your program with Sidekick, Claude, MCP," and lists API and MCP access on Professional. In plain terms, you can ask an assistant to pull your program data or draft partner messages instead of clicking through reports. Useful. It still won't tell you which creator's audience will buy.

Which affiliate app actually makes you more money?

Neither one. The page they send people to does.

Here's the math. Same hypothetical electrolyte brand. Affiliates send 10,000 clicks a month. Conversion rate 2.5%, average order value $80. That means revenue per visitor is $2.00, and those clicks earn $20,000 a month.

Now say the brand stops dumping affiliate traffic on a generic product page. The landing page picks up where the creator left off: same promise, same code applied, the "will this taste like chalk?" objection answered in the first screen, and a 3-tub bundle as the default. Conversion rate goes to 3.4%, average order value to $96. Revenue per visitor becomes $3.26 (3.4% x $96 = $3.264). On the same 10,000 clicks, that's $32,640 instead of $20,000.

That's $12,640 a month. The biggest fee gap in the table above is a few hundred dollars. One decision is a rounding error. The other is a second salary.

And there's a quieter win. When the page converts better, every affiliate earns more per click they send. That's the number creators actually care about, and it's how you keep the good ones posting. I broke that down in revenue per visitor vs earnings per click.

For numbers that aren't hypothetical: a bedding brand rebuilt the page for its adjustable pillows. Conversion rate went from 1.0% to 4.4%, average order value from $125 to $152. Revenue per visitor moved from $1.25 to $6.68. On 10,000 visitors, that's $66,800 instead of $12,500. See the full case study numbers. Real client numbers, not typical results, and not a promise of what your store will do.

The page side is in how to write a Shopify product page for affiliate traffic, and the creator version is in product pages for influencer traffic.

How do you choose in the next 10 minutes?

Quick decision path. Answer in order and stop at the first yes.

  1. Under $3,000 a month in affiliate sales and want referrals or PayPal later? UpPromote Free.
  2. Recruiting a small group of US, Canada or UK creators, and fine paying through your Shopify bill? Shopify Collabs.
  3. Need tiers, per-product rates, customer referrals or a marketplace listing? UpPromote, and price it at your real sales level first.
  4. Over $50,000 a month in affiliate sales? Compare UpPromote Enterprise against your current fees. At that volume its 1% rate beats Growth by $330 a month.

Before any of it, run the commission against your margin. If a 15% commission plus a 2% app fee eats the whole profit on the order, no app fixes that. Our contribution margin guide shows how to check, and the bigger channel plan lives in the ecommerce traffic strategy guide.

How much does Shopify Collabs cost?

How much does UpPromote cost in 2026?

UpPromote's Shopify App Store listing shows a Free plan that reviews up to $3,000 in referral sales a month, Growth at $29.99 a month plus 2% of successful referral sales, Professional at $89.99 plus 1.5%, and Enterprise at $199.99 plus 1%. Paid plans have a 14-day free trial.
