Mix and Match Bundles on Shopify: Setup and Pricing

Let shoppers build their own box and they'll fill it with your most expensive items. Here's how to set up mix and match bundles on Shopify with a fixed price and a premium cap that keeps the margin.

An open gift box on a dark navy table with three tea tins chosen from a long shelf of colorful tins, one glowing orange tin set slightly apart.

Give a shopper an empty box and she'll fill it with your most expensive stuff.

That's the first rule of mix and match bundles Shopify founders learn the hard way. I've watched it happen in order exports more than once, and it still makes me laugh. You build a cute "pick any 3" offer, you price it off your average item, and the first 40 orders are all your premium flavors.

Here's the short answer. Mix and match bundles on Shopify let a shopper build her own box from a set pool of products for one price. They're great for catalog brands with lots of flavors, scents or colors, because they turn a one-item order into a three-item order. But they need two guardrails: a fixed price that's easy to read, and a cap on premium items so the worst-case box still makes money. Shopify's free Bundles app doesn't do shopper-built boxes, so you'll set this up with a collection discount or a bundle builder app. Both paths are below, with the margin math.

A mix and match bundle without a premium cap is an all-you-can-eat buffet priced like a side salad.

What does Shopify actually support for mix and match bundles?

This trips up a lot of founders, so let's get it straight from Shopify's own docs.

The free Shopify Bundles app is available on all plans. It builds fixed bundles (up to 30 components) and multipacks, where you duplicate one product inside the bundle. You pick the products. You pick the quantities. The shopper buys the box you made.

What it doesn't do is let the shopper choose. The create bundles guide walks through Apps, then Bundles, then Create bundle, then Select products. There's no "let the customer pick 3 from this list" option anywhere in that flow.

One more detail worth knowing. Shopify notes that when a component's price changes, the bundle price doesn't update on its own. You change it by hand. Put that on your calendar if you run fixed kits next to your build-your-own box.

So for a true build your own bundle on Shopify, you have two roads.

Path What it does Best for Watch out for
Shopify Bundles app Fixed kits and multipacks you define Starter kits, gift sets, "3-pack" of one item No shopper choice
Collection discount, minimum 3 items Any 3+ items from one collection get a discount at checkout Similar-priced flavors or colors, zero app cost No box-builder screen, the deal lives in your copy
Third-party bundle builder app A "pick your 3" screen with progress bar and slots Big catalogs, gift boxes, subscriptions Monthly app fee, page speed, theme fit

How do you set up a pick any 3 bundle without an app?

This is the one most stores skip, and it's sitting right there in your admin.

Shopify's amount off products discount can apply to a specific collection, and it can require a minimum quantity of items. Shopify's wording matters here: when the discount applies to a collection, only items in that collection count toward the minimum. It works as an automatic discount, so nobody types a code.

Here's the setup in five steps:

  1. Create a collection called "Build Your Box" with only your standard-priced items.
  2. Go to Discounts, create an automatic amount off products discount.
  3. Choose a fixed amount off each item, applied to that collection.
  4. Set the minimum requirement to a minimum quantity of 3 items.
  5. Add "Any 3 for $36" to every product page in that collection.

Now watch what happens with a $14 tin. Take $2 off each item once the cart hits 3. Three tins at $12 is $36. Clean.

And here's the quiet trick. Your premium tins aren't in the collection. They don't count toward the 3 and they don't get the $2. You just built a premium cap without writing a single rule.

What you give up: there's no box-builder screen. The offer has to be sold in your page copy and your cart. That's fine for a lot of stores. If you want the visual "fill your box" experience, that's where apps come in.

When is a bundle builder app worth paying for?

Go read the Shopify Community thread where a merchant with one product in 30 colors asks how to let buyers "choose 3 of them." Every reply is an app recommendation. Bundler, Easify, BOGOS, JTDL. That's the market telling you the native tools stop short of a picker screen.

An app earns its fee when the choosing is the product. Gift boxes. Sampler kits. A tea brand with 22 flavors where the fun is building the box. If you want help picking one, I compared two popular options in Kaching Bundles vs Fast Bundle.

But here's the thing. The app only gives you the screen. It doesn't price the box for you. And pricing is where most mix and match offers quietly bleed.

The app gives you the box. Only your math decides whether the box makes money.

How should you price mix and match bundles on Shopify?

Two choices: a fixed price ("any 3 for $36") or a percent off ("pick 3, save 15%").

My take: fixed price wins whenever your pool is priced close together. A shopper reads "$36" in half a second. "Save 15%" makes her do math, and nobody does math on a phone. I wrote about the same effect in BOGO vs percent off.

Percent off wins when your prices are spread wide, because the discount scales with what she picks. The danger with a fixed price on a wide pool is the buffet problem from the top of this post.

Let's run the math on a store like this, a hypothetical. A loose-leaf tea brand. 18 standard tins at $14, with a landed cost of $4.20 each. 4 premium tins at $22, landed cost $9.50 each. The offer: any 3 for $36.

Box the shopper builds She pays Your product cost Gross profit Gross margin
3 standard tins $36 $12.60 $23.40 65%
3 premium tins, no cap $36 $28.50 $7.50 21%
1 premium + 2 standard, capped $36 $17.90 $18.10 50%

Same $36. The uncapped worst case keeps $7.50 before shipping and fees. That's $66 of retail value going out the door for $36, and your margin evaporates.

The cap pulls the worst case back to $18.10. That's the whole game. Price the box so the worst box a shopper can build still clears your margin floor. If one premium per box feels stingy, add a $5 surcharge for each premium pick instead. Most apps support it, and it tells the buyer the premium tin really is premium.

What does a good mix and match bundle do to revenue per visitor?

Units per order is the reason you're doing this. But don't judge the offer on bundle sales. Judge it on revenue per visitor: conversion rate times average order value.

Same hypothetical tea store. Before the bundle, conversion rate is 2.0% and average order value is $19 (mostly single tins, some pairs). That means revenue per visitor is $0.38. On 10,000 visitors, that's $3,800.

After the bundle goes live, say conversion rate dips a little to 1.9%, because the headline price on the page got bigger. Average order value climbs to $31 as more carts land on three tins. Revenue per visitor is now $0.59 (1.9% x $31 = $0.589). On the same 10,000 visitors, that's 190 orders at $31, or $5,890.

A slightly lower conversion rate and $2,090 more revenue. That's why conversion rate on its own lies to you. The same trap shows up when you pick a free shipping minimum, which is why a free shipping threshold test should be judged on margin per visitor too. The full playbook for this lever lives in our guide to increasing average order value on Shopify.

Bundles are one way to grow the order. Pages are the other. For a real one, one of our Amazon-to-Shopify products sold at $29.95 on Amazon, and on Shopify its average order value hit $177.75 with $78.87 net profit per sale after ads and inventory. Real client numbers, not typical results, and not a promise of what your store will do. The page did the persuading. The offer gave buyers a reason to add more.

Where does AI fit into building your bundle?

Here's where AI earns its keep, and it's less flashy than the hype.

Picking the pool is the hard part. Which 18 flavors go in? Which 4 count as premium? An AI assistant can read a 12-month order export and rank which items get bought together, which ones sell alone, and which carry the thinnest margin. Shopify says its own Sidekick assistant can help with analyzing data inside your admin, so the first pass doesn't even need a spreadsheet.

The second job is the page. A pick any 3 bundle lives or dies on one silent question from the buyer: "Which 3 should I pick?" A flavor grid doesn't answer that. A short "start here" row does. Three buyer types, three suggested boxes. That's copy, and it's exactly the kind of section AI can draft in minutes from your reviews. More bundle angles worth stealing are in Shopify bundle ideas.

A shopper staring at 22 flavors doesn't need more choice. She needs someone to say "start with these three."

What to do next

Open your product export today. Sort by price. Draw a line where "standard" ends and "premium" starts. Then build the worst-case three-item box and check its gross profit. If it's under your floor, add the cap before you add the offer.

P.S. A buffet makes money when the menu decides what goes on the plate. Cap the premium items, and your mix and match bundle stops feeding shoppers your margin.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify have mix and match bundles built in?

Not as a bundle type. The free Shopify Bundles app builds fixed bundles and multipacks, where you decide what goes in the box. To let shoppers pick their own items you either use a third-party bundle builder app or set up an automatic discount on a collection with a minimum quantity of 3 items.

How do I create a build your own bundle on Shopify without an app?

Put the eligible products in one collection, then create an automatic amount off products discount for that collection with a minimum quantity of items set to 3. A fixed amount off each item works best, because it turns three $14 items into a clean $36 box while leaving premium items outside the deal.

Should a pick any 3 bundle be a fixed price or a percent off?

Use a fixed price when your items cost about the same, because 'any 3 for $36' is easier to read than 'save 14%'. Use a percent off when prices in the pool are spread wide, because a fixed price lets shoppers stack the box with your most expensive items.

How do I stop customers from picking only premium items in a mix and match bundle?

Cap premium items at one per box, add a small surcharge for each premium pick, or leave premium items out of the bundle pool entirely. Run the worst-case box (every slot filled with your highest-cost item) before launch and make sure it still clears your margin floor.

Do mix and match bundles increase average order value?

They can, because they turn a one-item order into a three-item order. Judge them on revenue per visitor (conversion rate times average order value) and on gross profit per order, never on bundle sales alone.
