Shogun vs GemPages: Where Each Builder Earns Its Fee
GemPages publishes unlimited pages for $29 a month. Shogun wants $199 for the same. Here's when that gap is worth paying, and why the fee is the smallest number on your page.

What are you paying a page builder for? Most founders can't answer that in one sentence, and that's how a $29 tool and a $199 tool end up doing the same job on the same store.
So here's the short answer on Shogun vs GemPages. GemPages is the cheaper builder at every level: unlimited published pages for $29 a month, a free plan that can publish 1 page, and AI that turns a screenshot into a layout. Shogun charges $39 a month for 25 published pages and $199 a month for unlimited, and earns that fee when you run several stores, need a CMS layer, or want A/B testing bundled into the builder. On speed, nobody has published a test you can repeat, so you measure it on your own store. And on revenue, the fee is the smallest number in the whole decision.

Now run the year. GemPages Build is $348 a year. Shogun Grow billed yearly is $1,908. That's a $1,560 gap for the same thing on paper: unlimited published pages.
GemPages also showed a 20% off promo on its first 3 months when I checked, and it no longer sells yearly plans to new customers. Shogun's yearly billing saves about 20% if you're staying.
GemPages sells pages. Shogun sells a content system that happens to make pages. Price them that way.
Where does Shogun earn its fee?
Three places. If none of them describe your store, you're paying for a truck to carry groceries.
You run more than one store. Content syncing across stores and custom CMS collections sit on Shogun's $499 Advanced plan. If you're running a US store and a UK store off one catalog, keeping both in sync by hand is a part-time job. That's where the fee pays.
You want testing inside the builder. Shogun's pricing page lists A/B testing and personalization on the $39 Build plan. That's a genuine plus. But here's the math on the cap. 2,000 MTUs a month split across 2 versions is 1,000 shoppers each. At a 1.4% conversion rate, that's 14 orders per version. You can't call a winner on 14 orders. So for a store with traffic, the bundled testing is a taste, and the serious tests sit on the standalone plans that start at $39 a month for 3 active tests.
You have a team. Global sections, content scheduling and reusable sections are built for a marketer, a designer and a developer touching the same pages. A solo founder rarely needs them.
Where does GemPages earn its fee?
Almost everywhere a solo founder or a small team lives.
$29 gets you unlimited published pages. The $59 tier adds sales funnels and post-purchase upsells, which means one app can handle the product page and the offer after checkout. And AI Image to Layout lets you screenshot a page you like and get an editable layout back, which cuts the blank-canvas hour.
There's also GemPages MCP, which the listing describes as building and refining pages inside your AI chat. I checked: it's on the listing and the free plan's feature list. Useful if you already work in ChatGPT or Claude all day.
The trade-offs are fair to name. A comparison from EComposer, a rival builder, lists no global blocks and no built-in analytics as GemPages cons. And GemPages' own GemPages vs Shogun post concludes that GemPages wins on a modest budget, which is true on price and also exactly what you'd expect GemPages to say.
That's the pattern with every top result for this search. The comparisons are written by GemPages, by EComposer, or by another builder. Not one of them shows a speed test you can repeat.
Is Shogun or GemPages faster?
Nobody can tell you from the outside. Here's what's solid.
Both apps carry the Built for Shopify badge. Shopify's Built for Shopify requirements say an app "must not reduce the storefront Lighthouse performance score by more than ten points." That's the bar both cleared in Shopify's checks.
Your store is a different pile of apps, images and theme code. Merchants say so in the reviews. One low-star GemPages review from 2025 reports product pages taking 15 to 20 seconds to load. A low-star Shogun review calls its code "near impossible to remove" from the site. Both apps hold ratings above 4.8 across thousands of reviews, so read those as warnings, not verdicts.
So run the test yourself. It takes about 30 minutes.
- Build your best seller as a native theme page.
- Build the same page in GemPages (free plan publishes 1 page).
- Build it in Shogun (10-day trial).
- Run each URL through Google PageSpeed, mobile tab, 3 times.
- Compare each builder's median score to the native page.
Why 3 runs? Google's PageSpeed docs say scores move between runs because of network, hardware and resource contention. If a builder costs you more than 10 points against native, it's heavier than Shopify's own badge line. Cut it. Then uninstall the loser fully and check your theme code for leftovers.
The longer teardown on where builder weight comes from is in do Shopify page builders slow down your store.
Why is the fee the smallest number on your page?
Here's the thing I got wrong for years. I used to treat tool choice as the big decision. Spreadsheet, columns, feature checkmarks. Then I'd ship the same spec-sheet copy into whichever builder won.
Run the math on a store like this, a hypothetical. 15,000 visitors a month to a product page. Conversion rate 1.4%, average order value $72. That's $1.008 revenue per visitor (1.4% x $72), or $15,120 a month.
Now rebuild the page so it sells. Proof above the fold on a phone. The price objection answered before the buy button. A bundle that lifts the order. Say conversion rate moves to 2.1% and average order value to $86. That's $1.806 per visitor (2.1% x $86), or $27,090 a month. Same 15,000 visitors.
Before: 1.4% x $72 = $1.008 per visitor. After: 2.1% x $86 = $1.806 per visitor.
That's a $11,970 monthly gap. Shogun Grow at $199 is about 1.7% of it. GemPages Build at $29 is about 0.24%. The $170 difference between them is a rounding error next to the page.
The builder decides how the page looks. The words decide what the page earns.
This is why I judge every page on revenue per visitor instead of conversion rate. A prettier layout that sells smaller orders still loses. If the words are the slow part, here's how to turn a product URL into a sales page with AI, research layer included.
And the proof that the page is where the money hides: our Cooling Bamboo Sheets page went from a 1.0% conversion rate at a $125 average order value, $1.25 per visitor, to 4.3% at $254, or $10.92 per visitor. On 10,000 visitors that's $12,500 against $109,200. Real client numbers, not typical results, and not a promise of what your store will do. The full before and after numbers are on our results page.
No builder swap did that. The page did.
Plug in your traffic and today's numbers. If the gap is in the thousands, the builder fee is noise. Pick the one you'll actually ship in.
Which should you choose: Shogun or GemPages?
Go down this list and stop at the first yes.
Running 2 or more stores off one catalog? Shogun Advanced. The syncing is the product.
A team of 3 or more editing pages every week? Shogun Grow, for global sections and scheduling.
Solo, or a small team, publishing more than 25 pages? GemPages Build at $29. It does the job for $1,560 less a year.
You want funnels and post-purchase upsells in the same tool? The GemPages $59 tier.
Not sure you need a builder at all? Read do you need a Shopify page builder first. Shopify's own sections cover more than most people think.

What to do next
Open a spreadsheet and write 3 numbers for your best seller: last month's visitors, conversion rate and average order value. Multiply them out. That's what the page earns today. Then price the builder against the gap, never against the other builder.

P.S. A $29 builder with words that sell beats a $199 builder with a spec sheet. Every month.
Frequently asked questions
Is GemPages cheaper than Shogun?
Yes, at every tier we checked on October 13, 2026. GemPages publishes unlimited pages on its $29 a month Build plan, while Shogun caps its $39 Build plan at 25 published pages and unlocks unlimited pages at $199 a month ($159 billed yearly).
Which is faster, Shogun or GemPages?
No published comparison we found shows a speed test with a method you can repeat. Both apps carry the Built for Shopify badge, which requires an app not to cut your storefront Lighthouse score by more than ten points, so build the same page in each and test it on your own store.
Does Shogun or GemPages include A/B testing?
Shogun's pricing page lists A/B testing and personalization on its Build plan, capped at 2,000 MTUs a month, with standalone testing plans from $39 a month. GemPages points testing to its separate GemX product and lists A/B offer testing for funnels.
Do Shogun and GemPages have free plans?
GemPages has a free plan that publishes 1 page. Shogun's free Draft Mode lets you build pages but not publish them, and its paid plans come with a 10-day free trial.
Which page builder makes more money?
Neither, by itself. The builder sets the layout and the speed floor, but the words, proof and offer on the page decide revenue per visitor, and that gap is usually hundreds of times bigger than the monthly fee.
