Advantage+ Sales Campaigns: Setup Guide for Shopify Brands
Meta took the steering wheel. Advantage+ is now the default sales setup, and the only controls left that matter are the catalog, the conversion data and the creative you feed it.

Meta took the steering wheel. You still own the fuel tank.
That's the whole story of Advantage+ sales campaigns in 2026. Meta folded the old Advantage+ shopping campaign into the regular sales objective, so when you create a sales campaign in Ads Manager today, Advantage+ is on by default for your budget, audience and placements. The AI picks who sees the ad, where it runs, and how the money moves.
So the setup itself takes about ten minutes. Pick the sales objective, keep three switches on, add creative, publish. The part that decides whether it makes money happens before you ever click Create: your product catalog, your conversion data, and the creative mix you hand it. It also helps to know where this campaign fits in your wider ecommerce traffic strategy before you give it a budget.
Here's the short version of a clean Meta Advantage+ setup:
- Connect the Conversions API through Shopify's Facebook and Instagram app.
- Sync a clean catalog with a Google product category on every product.
- Create a sales campaign and keep Advantage+ on for Budget, Audience and Placements.
- Exclude existing buyers with a custom audience if you want new customers only.
- Load 5 or more genuinely different creatives, then leave it alone.
What changed with Advantage+ shopping campaigns?
If you ran Advantage Plus shopping campaigns last year, you remember a separate campaign type. One ad set and a slider for existing customer budget.
That old ASC campaign setup is gone for new builds. Meta's developer documentation for Advantage+ campaigns says that starting with Marketing API v25.0 you can no longer create the old shopping campaign type. Instead, any sales campaign counts as Advantage+ when three levers are on: Advantage+ audience, Advantage+ campaign budget, and Advantage+ placements. Flip any one of them off and the campaign's Advantage+ state reads disabled.
Two more changes caught founders off guard:
- Campaigns now hold ad sets. You can split by product line or offer inside one campaign, as long as the budget stays at the campaign level.
- The existing customer budget cap is gone. Meta's help page on how to replicate the existing customer budget cap says it plainly: the setting is no longer available, and you do the same thing manually now.
The ad account used to reward the person who could build the cleverest audience. Now it rewards the person who feeds the machine the cleanest data.
How do you set up an Advantage+ sales campaign in Ads Manager?
This follows Meta's current help article, Create a campaign in the Advantage+ campaign experience, step for step.
- Open Ads Manager and click + Create.
- Choose the Sales objective, then Continue. You'll see Advantage+ marked On in the top right.
- Under Budget, pick Campaign budget. That keeps Advantage+ on with one ad set or many.
- Under Audience, leave Advantage+ audience on. You can add suggestions (age, interests, custom audiences) and Meta treats them as hints.
- Under Placements, leave Advantage+ placements on.
- Build your ads, then publish.
Meta also shows a campaign score while you draft. Meta's own note says it doesn't predict performance, so treat it as a checklist.
Here's exactly what keeps the switch on and what kills it, pulled from Meta's page on what turns Advantage+ on and off:
| Section | Advantage+ stays on if you... | Advantage+ turns off if you... |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | Use campaign budget, with one or many ad sets, even with spend limits | Run multiple ad sets on ad set budgets |
| Audience | Use suggestions, raise minimum age up to 25, or exclude a custom audience | Use "Further limit the reach of your ads" and uncheck "Use as a suggestion" |
| Placements | Use Advantage+ placements | Exclude any placement, or opt out of mobile or desktop |
One detail worth knowing. If you do exclude a placement, Meta offers Allow limited spend to excluded placements, which lets up to 5% of budget go to each excluded spot when it's likely to help. And account-level controls (say, you can't ship to Canada) don't turn Advantage+ off at all. Put hard business limits there, not in the campaign.
What does Meta need from your Shopify store before you launch?
Here's the thing. Advantage+ decides who to show your ad to by watching who buys. If it can't see the purchases, it's guessing with your money.
Two pipes carry that signal on Shopify.
Pipe one: the Conversions API. Meta describes the Conversions API as a direct connection between your store's data and its delivery system, and says it's less affected than the pixel by browser errors and ad blockers. On Shopify you don't need a developer for this. In your admin, go to Sales channels, then Facebook & Instagram, then Settings, then Data sharing settings. Shopify's data sharing guide lists three levels:
| Level | What it sends | Conversions API? |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Meta pixel only, browser based | No |
| Enhanced | Pixel plus Conversions API | Yes |
| Maximum | Pixel plus Conversions API, plus Meta's newest ad features | Yes |
Pick Enhanced or Maximum. And update your privacy policy, because Shopify tells you to.
Pipe two: the catalog. The same app syncs your products into a Meta catalog. Shopify's publishing requirements say each product needs a Google product category, an image, complete variant details, a return policy, and it can't be free or digital. The three errors that block the most products: no image, no category, incomplete variants.
Meta's catalog ad requirements add one more: your pixel has to be connected to the catalog, so the ads can match products to what people actually viewed.
Then there's the newer catalog setup Meta is rolling out gradually. Per Meta's catalog campaign changes, the Advantage+ catalog ads toggle disappears. You keep Product data on at the campaign level, pick one catalog per campaign, choose a product set per ad, and pick your dataset at the ad set level. If you want dynamic product ads, choose Products from your catalog as the creative source.
Your catalog titles are ad copy now. If the feed says "SKU-4471 Blue M", that's what the algorithm has to work with.
How do you keep Advantage+ from spending on people who already bought?
This is the question I get most from founders rebuilding their accounts. And it's the right one to ask.
Returning buyers are cheap to convert. They'd probably have bought from your email anyway. So an Advantage+ campaign that quietly spends a big slice of its budget on them reports a gorgeous return on ad spend while finding almost nobody new. I've watched brands scale a campaign like that and wonder why total revenue didn't move.
Meta gives you two manual fixes now:
- New customers only. Use campaign budget, go to Audience, click Show more controls, and add a custom audience exclusion for your buyers. Advantage+ stays on.
- A capped split. Two ad sets. The first includes your buyers with "Use as a suggestion" unchecked and an ad set spending limit (a percentage or a dollar cap). The second excludes them and gets the rest.
Then set up audience segments under Advertising settings, so reporting breaks out new, engaged and existing customers. Now you can see where the money actually went.
What creative mix should you feed Advantage+?
Meta's Advantage+ sales campaign best practices ask for a wide variety of diverse creative. On that same page Meta says advertisers using these campaigns saw a 9% improvement in cost per conversion on average. Fine. But "diverse" doesn't mean 12 versions of the same product photo with different headlines.
Different means different buyers. A founder-to-camera video. A problem-first static. A customer photo. A comparison against the thing they use now. Each one pulls a different person out of the feed, and the AI sorts them. That sorting is the Meta Andromeda update at work, and it's why look-alike ads get pooled together.
The AI will also make variations for you. Meta's list of Advantage+ creative enhancements now includes text generation (up to 5 versions of primary text and headline), image generation, background generation for catalog ads, and video touch-ups that crop or expand video to 9:16 or 4:5. Use them. Review every preview before it goes live, because they can adjust your wording.
But here's what none of those tools touch.
Every one of those ads, however clever, sends the click to the same product page. Meta automated the targeting, the placements, the budget and half the creative. It didn't automate the page. That's the one piece you still fully control, and it's the piece that decides whether the algorithm finds buyers at all, because it only learns from people who buy.
Run the math on a store like this (hypothetical). $5,000 a month in ad spend at $1.25 per click buys 4,000 visitors. Conversion rate 1.5%, average order value $70. That means revenue per visitor is $1.05. On 4,000 visitors, that's $4,200. You're paying $1.25 for a click worth $1.05.
Now fix the page and nothing else. Conversion rate 2.5%, average order value $88. Revenue per visitor $2.20. On the same 4,000 visitors, that's $8,800. Return on ad spend goes from 0.84 to 1.76 on identical traffic.
4,000 visitors at $1.25 per click. Conversion rate x average order value x visitors.
That's what I mean by the fuel tank. A page that converts twice as often feeds Advantage+ twice as many purchase signals, so it learns faster who your buyer is. A leaky page starves it.
We saw the same page effect with a bedding brand. One product, Copper Bamboo Sheets, went from a 1.0% conversion rate and $125 average order value to 4.3% and $221. Revenue per visitor went from $1.25 to $9.50. On 10,000 visitors, that's $95,000 instead of $12,500. See the full case study numbers. Real client numbers, not typical results, and not a promise of what your store will do.
Advantage+ can find the buyer. It can't close the buyer. The page still has to do that part.
If your ads already work but the page doesn't, start with what a product page for Facebook ads traffic needs to say, then work out your own revenue per visitor before you touch the budget. And if you're tempted to fix a weak month by spending more, read why more ads won't fix conversion first.
What should you do first?
Open your Shopify admin today and check one setting: Facebook & Instagram, then Data sharing settings. If it says Standard, switch it to Maximum. That single change gives Advantage+ a cleaner view of your purchases than any campaign tweak will.
Then pull your cost per click and your revenue per visitor side by side. If the click costs more than the visitor is worth, no setup guide on earth fixes that from inside Ads Manager. There are other ways to grow sales without buying more ads, and the page is where they start.
Book Your Profit Audit
Advantage+ will spend your budget wherever your page lets it win, so the page is the lever. Get your free profit audit and we'll show you how much each click is really worth on your store, then rebuild a high-converting product sales page in less than 15 minutes.

P.S. Meta took the steering wheel, and it's not giving it back. Fill the tank with a page that converts and let it drive.
Frequently asked questions
What is an Advantage+ sales campaign?
It's a Meta sales campaign with Advantage+ turned on for budget, audience and placements, so Meta's AI decides who sees your ads, where, and how the money moves. It replaced the old Advantage+ shopping campaign, and it's now the default when you pick the sales objective in Ads Manager.
What happened to Advantage+ shopping campaigns?
They were folded into the regular sales objective. Meta's developer docs say that starting with Marketing API v25.0 you can't create the old shopping campaign type anymore. New campaigns show Advantage+ on or off for each section instead.
Can I exclude existing customers from Advantage+ sales campaigns?
Yes, but manually now. The old existing customer budget cap is gone. Add your buyers as a custom audience exclusion under Audience, then Show more controls, which keeps Advantage+ on. Or split new and existing buyers into two ad sets with a spend limit.
What turns Advantage+ off on a sales campaign?
Using ad set budgets across multiple ad sets, locking the audience with Use as a suggestion unchecked, excluding placements, or opting out of mobile or desktop. Raising the minimum age to 25 or excluding a custom audience does not turn it off.
Do I need the Conversions API for Advantage+ on Shopify?
You should have it. In the Facebook and Instagram app, only the Enhanced and Maximum data sharing levels send events through the Conversions API. Standard is pixel only, and ad blockers can eat that signal before Meta ever sees your purchase.
